For a month now, I’ve been thinking that I need to get up off my ass and write a check to Warnock’s campaign, but every day I’ve read about how many Dems are turning out to vote for Warnock, how the issue of Senate control works harshly against motivating Walker’s voters, and I’ve felt I could wait another day to write out that check.
Now that Runoff Day is tomorrow, there’s no point to writing a check any more. And if Walker pulls off an upset, I will be very disappointed in myself.
One thing that stopped me, though, was my uncertainty that any money I gave would, in fact, find its way to the Warnock campaign. What actually prevented me from responding to the many emails I got asking for funds was the thought “Are you absolutely sure this is a legit Warnock site? Maybe check it out?” which i never did.
AIUI, democrats have poured roughly $100M into Warnocks’s campaign. I don’t have a citation for that other than that’s what Walker claims, but even if it is close to accurate, unless you were planning to drop a few million, I don’t think it would make that much of a difference, so don’t feel too bad about it.
As far as donations go, I agree there are lots of places you can donate that say it will go to Warnock’s campaign, but how do you know? Donating directly to the DNC is probably safest since they will use it where they think it needs to be used most.
You may have contributed to a scam site. I donated and opted out of further Emails and only received one more request and I unsubscribed on that one and was done.
I’ve never, I both hope and think, voted for a candidate because of their ads. But I have voted against a candidate, in a state or local election, because of their advertising.
Has there been any exit polling of the early voters? Not that it necessarily tells us who is likely to win. If there is already a thread discussing this, please point me to it.
Yeah I’ve had the same issue sometimes. I would love to donate to certain campaigns but the truth is I know I can’t afford it. I am one of these 60% of people in the country who lives paycheck to paycheck. I suppose i could throw $5 out here and there but i dont really see what difference it would make. And I do follow current events and politics, and take the opportunity to engage with other people and educate when I can. And of course I vote in every single election that I can. The most important thing is voting, as long as you do that I think everything is good and you can sleep fine.
Giving to the DNC is great, but as you say your money will be used how they think it will be used best.
So, your donation may be used directly to support your candidate of choice, or it may help pay to reupholster the chairs in the DNC headquarters lobby. And that’s not even to disparage the latter – that’s a legitimate need.
However, every candidate has an official campaign committee that you can donate to and your funds will go exclusively to supporting that candidate. You should just be able to Google “Candidate X’s campaign committee” and get the result. If you want extra assurance, you can search the Federal Election Commission website for information on the candidate’s campaign committee. Here’s the FEC information for Warnock for Georgia.
It’s all about the money. Politics has nothing to do with it. It’s about maximizing profits.
Do you think it is simply coincidental that these races are so close? Almost exactly 50:50? That is by design. Both sides have realized that if it is 70:30, contributions are much lower. It doesn’t matter who wins, as long as it is very close, people will pour in money.
I’ve been called cynical. Perhaps. It isn’t an issue of both sides do it, but, rather, this is how it is done. The only way to win is to not play.
