Was Candidate Pat Paulsen misquoted? ;)

One of my fondest memories of the Smothers Brothers Show was their own Presidential candidate, the very handsome and dynamic Pat Paulson.

(Although I’m beginning to think it had all been a big joke…)

I recall one time he claimed after an embarrassing statement that he had been misquoted. This was during some kind of press interview. The only problem with his denial was that a tape had just been played back. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m having trouble finding the segment, though. This is strange because youtube has several other clips on him. Can anyone find it elsewhere?

Thank you in advance.

When I ran for student council president in high school, I wrote Pat Paulson asking him to endorse me.

Unfortunately, he didn’t receive my letter until three months after the election, but he wrote a very nice apology and sent an autographed photo.

Some Pat Paulsen editorials.

Picky, picky, picky.

"We Can’t Stand Pat.

One of the best slogans ever.

Wasn’t that also used against Nixon?

Help jog my failing memory here. Was he on Smothers Brothers or Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In?

I’m kinda remembering Laugh-In.

Smothers Brothers:

Both! He was a guest on Laugh-In also.

He sang! I remember the words to this day:

“My brain is green
with drippings of yellow and red.
But I don’t mind.
I’m color blind.”

Also… This one I only remember imperfectly…

“I was standing by the side of the road
when a dirty old man came up
and tied his horse to me.”

I can’t find any evidence that he appeared on Laugh-In:

He appeared on a lot of shows:

Note that you have to look under both Actor and Self, since the IMDb considers the times when someone uses their own name to be different from those in which they appear with a different name.

If nominated, I will not run.
If elected, I will not serve.
If impeached, they’ll have to drag me out.

There’s also this:

IMDb cast lists aren’t very reliable for some Sixties shows. I know several of Johnny Carson’s guests are missing for that period.

As noted below, maybe. I confess, I’m working from nearly fifty years of wetware memories, and personal memory is known to be a really rotten cite for evidence. But I think I watched him on Laugh-In singing those two songs.

You might try searching a multiple-DVD set called Smothered. Even if you don’t find the clip you want, it’s a good watch.

Yes, I believe Al Traina has been left off some lists of Tonight Show guests.
