Was Cecil once a Mouseketeer?

Here I was, minding my own business, skipping through some archived Straight Dope columns, when cruel fortune struck my innocent heart with an arrow of agony. In this column, the asker says

A shameless implication that Cecil used to be a Mouseketeer! And what does the Perfect Master reply to this outrageous accusation? No rebuttal, no defense, nothing! Just this:

I’ll bet! Could this be true? Could that font of flawless wisdom have been a Mouseketeer? Say it ain’t so!

[sub]As an unrepentant European I know very little about what being a Mouseketeer entails, but I do know that Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake have been such, which has set my respect for that profession pretty low. At least Renee O’Connor has the decency to be ashamed about it.[/sub]

I’m not sure “Mouseketeer” applied strictly to people who appeared on the show. It might also have extended to viewers who became members of the “club” by sending in money in exchange for a set of mouse ears, a letter signed by Uncle Walt, and other benefits of membership.

Someone older than myself (I’m 33) can probably give more detail.

But our beloved Cecil couldn’t possibly have been one of Walt’s lesser minions…such a presence as he must have been one of the BIG ONE’S.

Folks, we have a gen-u-ine MOUSKETEER in our midst. His name is Cecil…won’t you make him welcome!!

Also allow that “The Mickey Mouse Club” 1955-1959 has some class over the MMC 1989-1995 which contained the you-know-whos. I assume “The New Mickey Mouse Club” 1977-1978 was also vastly inferior to the original.

As someone who was subjected to various TV Disney shows of the 80s and 90s I can assure you that those shows were nothing less then sheer torture. Whereas what I’ve seen of the 50s version was at least as good as any other saturday morning clown show.

Curses. I’m seething now thinking about MMC and Teens Incorporated. Curse you for making me think of them.

Oh if only I had some “You Can’t do that on Television” to mentlefloss those shows out of my memory. I’ll never get to sleep now. I can barely type as it is.

Pardon me while I go froth at the mouth.

I was a 60’s viewer of the MMC, but I was also an avid viewer of You Can’t Do That On Television in the 80’s. Hey, I had kids, and they loved it so who was I to turn the channel??

Bizarre Canadian TV…whaddya you expect? Heh.

Who would have thought there was so much humor in eating cat meat?
FYI it was Kids Inc., not Teens Inc.

Maybe there’s a reason Cecil was a Mousketeer.
