Yes, Jefferson or a close male relative definitely had kids with Hemmings. It’s possible that it was his brother or Uncle (I think), who were both ne’er-do-wells and may have taken advantage of her. In her position, I’d definitely opt to claim they were Tom’s descendants and not the scum-sucker’s. And all three may have slept with her, so who really can say.
Anyway, there were definitely Jefferson descendants there.
George Washington may have been sterile, though, right? He married the widow (and mother of four) Martha Custis when they were both only 27 and no further children were born.
As for black cowboys, I was taught in elementary school in the 70s in the USA that about 1/3 of cowboys were black or Latino, so it’s no secret. Jesse James, though, was a prominent supporter of the Confederacy and performed guerrilla operations on their behalf during the War. Guess he was self-hating, huh?
Cowboy wasn’t some glamorous or heroic job; it is only pop culture that fictionalized it to seem that way. It was just a blue collar, hard, low-paying, dirty job, like driving a truck (except that truckers today are paid decently and they can sleep in a comfortable sleeper cab instead of in a tent vulnerable to animals, Indians or robbers.)
