Was Evangelion on American TV?

Back when I lived in Ohio, I used to collect issues of Animerica. In each issue, they had a part where they listed various animes that were being shown on American tv and where they were being shown. They listed Evangelion as being shown on some TV station in California at like 2 AM.

I moved out to California over a year ago. Tonight, we were talking about various animes, and I mentioned this to my roommates and both of them started laughing. They said no such thing would ever happen. I searched on google in vein. Unfortunately, I sold my old issues of Animerica, so I can’t look up the channel name or anything.

So was Evangelion shown on American TV or did Animerica just make stuff up?

It’s not beyond the realm of possibility. Some individual PBS stations have shown various anime series in the past, and the International Channel also runs anime. I don’t know about Evangelion in particular.

Evangelion has been shown on ADV Film’s video-on-demand channel, The Anime Network. This is fairly recent, though, and not available in California.

I wouldn’t doubt it. I remember watching lots of anime on sci-fi channel and fox before it ever took off. It was always on at odd hours but I woke up for it because I was fascinated!

wow that ADV channel is out? Hmph, only in philly…wait a sec, I live in Philly! damn! I have urban cableworks >:(

damn you comcast!!

Yes it was.

From Anime News Network a few years ago.

Cartoon Network also showed the first two episodes a while back, as part of Giant Robot Week. They were heavily edited, though, despite ADV’s promise that they would be shown uncut. Then again it was in Toonami’s time slot, so I guess it isn’t that surprising.
