I watched the extended version of Dune, it uses voiceovers and artwork and deleted scenes to extend and put the original Dune in better context.
Near the beginning we apparently not only see images from the time of the Butlerian jihad but get more info than any book provided aside from the prequels not written by Herbert. Was this official artwork and info approved by Frank Herbert?
Doubt it, he sold the rights but had no involvement in production. At most they would ask him questions about the universe they weren’t quite clear on. From these conversations, the majority believed Herbert was a strange man. He did get to visit the desert and see some filming. From what he saw, which wasn’t much, he was quite pleased with how they treated his work..
