Was S1E1 Daisy's first day at Downton Abbey?

Someone on another site said she thought she read somewhere that the scenes in S1E1 where the camera follows Daisy going about her tasks was her first day on the job. It seems unlikely though, considering how she seemed to know exactly what to do and seemed to know the geography of the house.

Anybody know when she began there?

The first few episodes give mixed messages where Daisy is concerned. In the first episode she clearly knows her way around the place (there’s no aimless wandering and getting lost as she makes up the fires), and she’s already done all of her tasks (i.e. blackening the stove) before Mrs. Patmore has to ask if she’s done them, and when she reveals that she’s completed all of them Mrs. Patmore says “will wonders never cease?”, indicating that Daisy didn’t have such a great track record for completing her tasks on time (suggesting that she’s been there for a while). However, in the same episode Daisy asks why the newspapers were ironed, suggesting that she was new there, but in the script book Fellowes himself said that he inserted that line specifically to inform the audience why the papers were ironed.

Later in the first episode, Daisy once again seemed to be “new” when she asked Carson if she was to go upstairs and greet the duke with the others.

For some reason I still have the impression that Daisy had been at Downton for at least several years by the time the series started. Daisy was most likely about 12 or 13 when she began, and she certainly wasn’t that young in the first episode (no 12-year-old back then would have boobs that big). I see her as being about 15 in the first episode, no younger.

So what’s the verdict?

It was just a typical day, not her first day.

No, not her first day. I think the reason she asked if she should go up is that a below-stairs scullery maid would normally not have the uniform or position to greet someone. They weren’t seen but not heard, they weren’t even seen. She was to be done with her chores and downstairs before the family got up. I’d bet a girl like that would go into service at about 14 years old.

The OP is beyond obsessed with this character.

Well, everyone needs to be obsessed with someone.

I’m obsessed with the OP.

Wouldn’t be fun if the actress that played Daisy was obsessed with me? Full circle, man!

That interchange doesn’t indicate that she’s brand new, just that she doesn’t totally understand her position. It’s also a clue to the viewers that class and status are quite important even among the servants. It’s not two levels with the aristocracy and the servants; it’s a hierarchy that extends throughout the household.

Daisy’s suggestion that she greet guests is as ridiculous as Carson having tea with the Countess.

It’s a work of fiction. Sometimes the writer has to have characters asking questions they should already know the answer to so that the viewer/reader can learn the answer.
