Wasteland 2!

Just a reminder: Wasteland 2 releases tomorrow Sep 19th!!

After a successful kickstarter and what was a very well received Beta on steam, it’s finally coming out!

Wasteland, BTW is really the prequel to the Fallout series. It’s very much a post-apocalyptic adventure but with an 80’s futurism sensibility (vs Fallout’s 50’s future). Expect an in depth, complex narrative that serves up consequences to almost all of your decisions sometimes immediately, and many times 5+ hours down the line. Combat is turned base, similar to Divinity: Original Sin, or the original Fallout series, and it’s packed full of bandits, no-good hustlers, and all manner of radioactive and monstrous denizens for you to parley, ally with, deceive, or kill at your pleasure.

This is probably my most anticipated game of the season, second only perhaps to Pillars of Eternity (though I’m thinking that may get pushed back to next year), and maybe tied with Dragon Age: Inquisition.

If you’re looking for a deep CRPG, this IS IT.

Been waiting for this almost 25 years. Donated to the Kickstarter campaign more than 2 years ago. Played the beta a few months ago. It’s everything I wanted it to be. Can’t wait to get my hands on the full game tomorrow!

Same here.

I actually missed out on the Kickstarter for this game, but scored a copy as a package with a later Kickstarter. For Pillars of Eternity, I think, but I get it confused with Tides of Numenera. They both seem to be taking the mantle of ‘successor to Planescape: Torment’.

A lot of this stuff I paid for like two years ago is suddenly coming out now, and I don’t have time to finish it all. Plus, it’s certainly going to stall the project of building a chargen for D&D 5e. Need more time.

I have fond memories of the first game, and absolutely no confidence that a modern game can reproduce what made it great.

I am watching the new re: Wasteland 2 with casual interest.

By some bizarre coincidence that I wouldn’t go and read too much into, Steam seems to be down at the moment, just as I’d like to start my download and go to bed.

I really like the look of the old school CRPG combat, but is the whole game loaded with robots? I get the retro-futurism thing, and the shared lineage from fallout, butman would it distract me if there was a post apocalyptic survival game where battling robots and turrets is your bread and butter. I’m fine with exaggerated mutated creatures from the radiaton, but the whole point of those sorts of scenarios is a scarcity of technology.

I haven’t played the beta all that much, but the first two areas don’t have much in the way of hi-tech enemies … but based on some early clues, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was an area later on full of them. Not to mention the huge mecha-scorpion on background of the start menu.

Don’t want to spoil much, but robots as a whole haven’t been seen in the world in a long time, and it seems their return is tied to the story.

Seriously considered taking today off just to play this. And I’m going out of town this weekend so I’ll have to wait until Sunday night. I guess I’ve already waited like a third of my life for this, I can go a few more days!

The first review says that the combat is pretty tedious and the worst aspect of the game. That isn’t surprising given that they they went for a more-limited clone of FO’s combat, which you’d know is super dated if you tried to play that game in the last few years. Shame they didn’t do a more engaging system for something that represents probably half the game. Maybe something with classes and skills? I admit that I’m struggling to think of good turn-based systems from the last few years. Maybe it didn’t need to be turn-based?

They did praise the writing though, but used “humour” to describe it, so that could be hit or miss for you depending on your tastes. Sounds decent enough from Eurogamer’s review. Not a $40 purchase for me though.

Divinity’s turned based combat was really good, IMHO. X-Com’s too. I had fun with the combat I engaged in at least, I’m going to read the review see what their take is on it.

It’s going to be a loooong day

The wife is going away for the weekend too, taking the boy :frowning: At least this should help me miss them less

Launch trailer!

So many donuts!

Well, I bought the game, downloaded it, read the manual, rolled up a party (because I’m old-school enough to know you NEVER use pregen characters in a game like this), played the first half-hour or so, then deleted my party and my save members because I wasn’t satisfied with them.

Anyone out there got any insight yet on how to design an effective party? I’m thinking I want a good balance of weapon skills and conversation/tech skills, but jumping headfirst into a new rules system like this I really have no context on what’s going to be important and what I should expect.

So far, what I’ve heard is:

  1. high int for more skills later, but a tougher beginning.

  2. don’t overlap weapon skills. i.e. one guy with a rifle, one guy with an smg, etc. ammo conservation works much better that way.

  3. don’t spend all your skill points at level up - if you’ve got some to spare when you happen across an interesting locked door or something, use them then.

oh, and strength -> hp on levelup and is NOT retroactive

Yeah, under the old system you kind of wanted to pump up your INT and have everybody get a variety of skills, including medical, which would then improve through use. Now you don’t get random stats, so you can’t sit on the randomizer until a god is born. You have to make sacrifices.

I went through chargen the first time heavily specializing people, and figured maybe after playing through a bit I’d have an idea what I really wanted people to do. Even still I worried.

Is it necessary to have all three of the social skills, or are they all just different flavors to achieve the same end? And do you need more than one medic? Mechanic? Any word on Toaster Repair?

Ok, str and int good early focus on the rest later. Pretty much the complete opposite of what i did hah.

Was about to start… until I remembered that I need me some custom portraits

If anyone is looking here’s a couple of places where I found some:
