I can’t even imagine what it must smell like up there in that nest once the wind stops blowing. Do they ever take out the trash?
#3 is hatching! It has a large crack in it- you can see it right now!
The camera has panned in on the third egg and there appears to be some movement.
C’mon Mama, let us see!
Papa just brought a small trout.
What? Take out the trash? That’s why it’s up in a tree, so the wind blows the debris out of the nest.
#3 is out of the shell. That was amazing. Mama got up and I could see the shell split completely in half, with the chick pushing it apart. The shell spread farther apart, then Mama blocked the view. When I could see it again, the two halves were well separated with the chick lying between them.
Well good luck to #3. I don’t see how it can compete with the bigger, more established offspring.
The smallest bird (of the two already hatched) appears to be really struggling to get anything to eat.
I’m talking about the decomposing rabbit, muskrat, crow, two fish, etc.
Not to mention all the accumulated droppings.
But birds have a very poor sense of smell, it wouldn’t bother them a bit.
Wow. I just got a good look at all three eaglets. How awesome they are! I was watching when three was hatching (towards the end) but never got a good look. My screen just froze on the three hatchlings before mom covered them again, and saw all three tiny faces looking back. great shot!
There’s a good look at all three. Mama just flew away. #1 is being extremely aggressive towards the other two.
I saw mom/dad pull a piece of eggshell out of the main area of the nest, so they do some housekeeping, apparently. What happened to the other eggshells?
Apparently Benjamin Franklin didn’t think too highly of the Bald Eagle :
"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country…
You were a great man Ben but you were wrong sir.
Ack! That fish is still alive!
You want the babys’ food to be fresh, right? How can you get fresher than still alive?
"Aw, ma - sushi for lunch again?"
I just saw one of the babies poop. It tipped its butt up and SHOT a stream of poo up over the side of the nest!
Thank goodness they are all doing well! I was getting a little down over the big bully taking over.
But it looks like everyone is holding their own - very good news indeed.
While I expect some bullying, as long as the parents can keep supplying ample food it shouldn’t get too serious.
I have three much smaller birds in my home, and they get quite rough with each other at times. Birds can be quite aggressive, even those that aren’t primarily predators. I can only assume raptors are much worse about that than my parrots.
I have a question: the feed says they’re nesting near a fish hatchery. Do the owners/mngmnt at the hatchery resent the eagles for taking so many fish? I know eagles are protected and all, but is this simply a case where the bad publicity wouldn’t be worth it if it was found out that, say, they were taking steps to chase the eagles off or discourage them from nesting or otherwise protecting their fishy property?
Looks like the adult is scarfing down some food - parents gotta eat, too! But there are raindrops on the lens, and it’s making for some trippy effects as the eagle’s face moves in and out of their distortion.
