We just had several major thunderstorms roll through the area over the weekend. Many tornados and as many “just bad storms” with high damaging winds and lots of fireworks and some of the loudest and most protracted thunder I’ve ever heard. Lots of flooding, property damage and some loss of life. There’s a lull at this moment but the forecast is for more of the same through the week. Needless to say we’re a little soggy over here right now. I’m guessing it’s El Nino. We had something similar happen a few years back when that was supposed to be the culprit. It doesn’t storm in this part of the world as bad as others, imo, but when it rains, it pours.
Be glad you do not live in the KC metro area.
Yeah, it’s mostly cleared out here in Knoxville for the time being - there’s even sunshine out there!
But they say more will come in shortly. No matter - it’s exam week anyway, so at least the rain keeps me from staring out the window, sighing and wishing I could be anywhere other than studying.
japatlgt, where in TN are ya? If you’re anywhere near East TN, you should come to the fantabuluous East TN Dopefest.
Murfreesboro here.
We got the crap beat out of us. My car looks like a golf ball now from all the hail.
The worst part is that the plane I was going to fly to the TN Dopefest may be totaled. The rear window got broken out by the hail, which isn’t a huge deal. But it looks as if the winds may have twisted the airframe.
Sigh.
Yeah I feel the waterlogged issue too. But ours has been mostly rain and not hail. Sorry to hear about your car. Yesterday our power was out for a couple of hours due to the storms here. The rain finally let up here and as Lsura said there was even some sunshine today. I hope it’s clear by Friday. I am off that day.
The worst of it missed us to the north, but just barely. Last night we had three or four hours of pounding rain and near-continuous lightning, but not much damage aside from a few trees taken down and loss of several million hours of sleep. And www.weather.gov is predicting more of the same tonight.
Anyone have a recommendation for what to do with a large dog who gets horrible panic attacks during thunderstorms?
May I recommend to you the Anxiety Wrap. Our golden retriever has severe thunderstorm anxiety, and this has literally saved his life. Ignoring the damage that he’s done to door frames when he panics (for some reason he takes it out on door frames, go figure), we’ve been afraid his heart would burst, it was pounding so hard. Since getting him a Wrap, he’s still afraid and quivers but his heart doesn’t go into that same rapid-fire panic beating. It’s basically a specially designed jacket; we don’t know how it works, but I can assure you it does work! (And no, I’m not affiliated with them in any way!)
That’s interesting, butrscotch; kind of like Temple Grandin’s autism-calming device, the name of which escapes me right now. Thanks for the tip; I’ll check it out.
It seems to work very much on the same concept, jackelope. I can’t figure out why it works better than just a regular dog jacket, but I’m not about to argue with success! Our poor dog is on doggie Prozac, and my sister-in-law the dog trainer has sent us a “floral essence” called Rescue Remedy that we put in his drinking water, and between everything we’ve got his anxiety down to a manageable level. But the Wrap has made the biggest difference of all.
Sorry for the thread hijack!
It’s been pretty bad here in Cleveland. Ever since that 'quake a week or two ago, we’ve been hit by severe thunderstorm after severe thunderstorm. When I went out to my car this afternoon to go to work, I noticed we have a large lake where our backyard used to be.
