Wax museums - what about the bodies?

Wax museums date back at least until to the 18th century, where famous people, often criminals, were often the subjects.

Nowadays, they make the bodies of the wax figures from fiberglass and aluminum, two substances that weren’t available when Madam Tussaud was starting out. The heads were plaster with wax sculpted over them, but what did they use for the bodies? Wood? Plaster? Wire?

Anyone know?
