Way to go, Microsoft...

I just got a new wireless keyboard/mouse combo, and the software bundled with it didn’t include the right driver version for the mouse.

Not that big a deal - 5 minutes worth of searching/downloading/setup - but still, it seems like a significant oversight to me. Then again, this is Microsoft we’re talking about here.

You had to install a driver for your mouse? I haven’t had to do that since Windows 3.1–I assume it’s one of those enhanced button things where it lets you do fancy-schmancy input remapping?

First off, you shouldn’t have to install the software at all. It shoudl normally pop up automatically. They include it for extras. Second, what kind of mouse did you get? I haven’t heard of any similar problem with MS mice. I have one myself and it worked fine. I certainly haven’t heard of any mispackaging.

The mouse is “Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000”. Yes, it is a fancy-schmancy mouse with the extra buttons and so on. Default mouse drivers did not include this particular mouse driver, so I picked a couple that were close and experienced mildly annoying issues with the mouse (but no show stoppers). I worked for a day with the ‘close but no cigar’ mouse drivers and then switched this morning. Bah. I’ve tried the wireless mouse & keyboard in the past and haven’t been happy with them. I thought maybe in the two years since the last try they had improved. Lookin’ like maybe not. I’m starting to think about going back to the wires.

<shrug> I had the same thing happen with my Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard. So do I get to make a thread blasting Logitech for their buginess?

For what it’s worth, I couldn’t find any drivers that would work. So I’m just using the generic mouse drivers and giving up on the fancy schmancy controls.

What are these ‘driver’ things of which you speak?

Ahh, the “Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000”. a wonderful device, when it works.

Mine didn’t have the right drivers, and it reacted badly with one of my lights in my office. When I replaced the light, the mouse worked.

A little.

Then it decided that 11:00 PM was an excellent time to become confused. It would stop working from 11:00-11:25 every night.

Then it finally, after replacing the entire PC, went “OK, I like this PC better. I’ll work now!”

I like the mouse, once it finally worked.
