What was so stupid about the person quoted in the OP? Presumably the spelling errors were introduced by the poster.
I wasn’t the one pitting people for being stupid, though.
Wouldn’t protesting after school lend more credibility to their message?
You think that’ bad – wait’ll you see what types they put on the all the newsreels during the annual New York City Gay Pride Parade.
Well, they’re at it again today, apparently.
I guess what bothers me the most about this is that it’s just plain ignorance and stupidity at work. Most of the kids out in the street, skipping school, and blocking the 91 at rush hour don’t really know WHY they’re doing it. It’s really difficult to take any of them seriously…especially when the ones that have some foggy clue as to what the protest is about say things like this gem from a KFI sound bite last night; most of which was unintelligible screaming, but what came out of her that WAS clear as a bell was:
Bleeped, of course, so the FCC doesn’t do their thing.
There’s a google ad at the bottom for lawn mower business…
Kids these days. Why, when I was growing up in the 60s, we knew how to throw a protest, damnit! Not like thess slackers. Man, the world is gone to hell in a handbasket.
The sign I saw one of the little darlings holding said: : George Washington was an Immigrant" Ah I believe he was born in America(wasn’t the US yet)
I suppose you could say the Native Americans were immigrants too in all of the Americas.
Isn’t their presence in the United States an implicit acknowledgement that life is better here?
Wouldn’t it be nice if it were made expliciti or if perhaps one of the protestors actually acknowledged it out loud?
Or do you perfer the fucking assholes comment?
You know, I am pro-immigration. Life in the US is overall better than in Mexico.
The Mexicans have come and work hard, and try to improve themselves. They are currently rebuilding New Orleans.
Here comes the racist part, the managers in New Orleans are happy with the Mexicans. They work harder than the 3rd generation welfare poor that fled the city. (Sorry mostly very poorly educated Blacks & Whites). The city of New Orleans is going to get a strong infusion of Mexican into its Gumbo. This is good for the business and regrowth of New Orleans.

Wait, what fucking assholes comment? Am I missing a fucking assholes comment in this thread? Because normally I’m right on top of fucking assholes.
But anyways, no, it doesn’t really bother me that much if people who are upset about something don’t go out of their way to comment about the positive aspects of the thing they’re upset about. It can be an effective rhetorical device and in fact I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it used regarding just about every issue, group, faction, nation, etc. I can think of, but it’s not necessary that every criticism be prefaced with “this is a great (fill in the blank), but…”
Um… no? Perhaps you are thinking of Fox News, the news station that many purport to have a right-wing agenda (I don’t care whether it does or not. CHANGE THE CHANNEL.) FOX is a network station, i.e. it broadcasts normal television programs, not news. Any news broadcast would be from the local affiliate, not the network. You can insult a station all you want, but when you insult all their viewers, you are insulting me . Maybe you’re the one with a prejudice problem?
I dare say almost everyone here is, as most here are either immigrants or offspring of immigrants.
The overall fight is about legal immigration. Nobody on either side of the aisle is against immigration. The issue is enforcing immigration based on immigration law. People are still free to come here. I haven’t heard any serious call for a complete blockage of immigrants by anyone that has any power in in legislation.
The point of the debate now is preventing those that feel some “right” to be here above everyone else, bypassing the law of the nation they so much love and revere. My ancestors didn’t gain citizenship in Ottawa or Mexico City, then pull an end-around to sneak into North Dakota. They boarded a ship, sailed to Ellis Island, registered, waited for permission to leave, then settled.
Why should the illegals, *that know it’s illegal to run the border crossings[/], get precedent over those around the world patiently waiting to enter legally through the proper channels? Then demand they “deserve” to be here because they’re already here?
Of course, some of these kids protesting are illegals staging walk-outs of schools that spend the public dime on them to attempt to educate them. Somehow this is supposed to make their case more pertinent than the people actually paying the public school bill.
These kids certainly do need to go to school to learn the basics. Apparently I’m expecting too much from the school system that is perpetually broke. Maybe we should expect Mexico to teach basic American Civics to those they actively encourage to come here? Seems a minor wish, and something that can reasonably be expected of Fox. But it would give the kids a better handle on America than walking out of a free education to bitch about how since they’re here, it’s not really a problem and us damn gringos just have to deal with it.
What Exit?, I should’ve mentioned that wasn’t directed at you personally. I took the quoted line and ran with it.
I know what your saying in your post above, but as long as we have jobs that Mexicans see as an improvement over their condition in Mexico, they are going to cross that long border without worrying about immigration laws. We might as well accept the reality. There is no good answer.
I think changing the laws an allowing for special status to Mexican Migratory workers might be a good idea. The Families should stay home until the Worker gets a legal status to be in the country. We shouldn’t be expected to take care of illegals schooling. Actually I am not sure what we should do. There are many areas that need addressing.

In case you´re not aware, developing nations have a huge problem related to “brain leaks”, professionals, scientist and highly educated people are a significant part of the emmigration volume. In my countries case it´s quite ironic that, since scolarship up to University level is free, we subsidize the education of people that will (on an alarming percentage) leave and follow their careers on the first world to the benefit of those countries.
In all fairness, that demographic is not inclined to follow the illegal route, but it rubs me the wrong way to hear how US immigrants are all a bunch of uneducated backwards people; the vast majority of the people I know that packed and left where decidedly not within that definition, most of them are talented, hard working people with a strong will and determination to succeed.
I guess it´s a case of natural selection that leads to those characteristis, it´s not easy at all to leave your life behind and start from scratch, specially knowing there´s risk of beign deported and loosing everything; definetly not for the faint of heart.
The whole context of this discussion is illegal immigrants. I don’t know what to say about about how to keep educuated people at home. Usually they leave because their home economies suck, and usually that’s because of protectionist economic policies by their government.
I’m unaware of much complaint in the US about hoards of uneduecated legal immigrants coming here. If anything, it’s the opposite. Nativists get pissed off because highly educated Chinese, Indians, and other nationals go to colleg here, stay, and “steal” jobs form Americans. I’m not one of those (which is why I put “steal” in quotes).
If you want “in all fairness”, you’re going to have to play along. The negative words you hear of immigrants are about illegal, uneducated, socially draining immigrants that cross the border under cover of darkness and often with weapons to invade (what other word is there?) the US. Most often with the explicit condonement, and sometimes training, of the Mexican government. Often times, they end up in local street gangs run by, guess who? Illegal immigrants. (This applies to myriad gangs from many nationalities.) The majority, though, are Mexican. La Raza. They aren’t here to build America up. Some are, but they’re outnumbered by the bad seeds.
I realize the “brain drain” that is seriously hindering growth in other nations. I’m proud that my country is one that they want to come to for a better life. I hope I can say this in a way that isn’t taken wrong. I, too, wish they would stay in their native countries. To help build the nations to a stronger level. To build to a level that America wouldn’t be such a Holy Grail. IOW, that other nations could educate the young to take over a better country. The education is there in so many countries, but everyone wants the immediate reward, and doesn’t want to build the future. Some do, but the majority don’t seem to care to help the future generations.
For all of that, though, the people you’re talking about are coming here legally. Those creating the “brain drain”. They are coming here with skills and education that benefit the US. They are the ones that are welcomed by almost everyone.
The “dirty, uneducated” are by no means disqualified. Those are very broad terms and not meant literally. In Grand Forks and Fargo we’ve had a (relatively) large influx of refugees from Sudan in the past 2 years. They didn’t have shirts on their backs until they got here in many cases. These people cannot stop talking about a dream they never dared dream 3 years ago about living in America. They, on a whole, dedicate themselves to making their way and learning English. It’s truly inspiring how they live to assimilate to the land they never thought they’d see, and how desperately they want to be American.
Compare these people, and thousands like them waiting to come here, with those that want to jump a barbed-wire fence then demand to be allowed to stay. Then demand they shouldn’t be forced to learn English. Then demand that because they picked the right area of the border at the right time that they “deserve” to be here. Then join various groups that insist on sovereignty since they had ancestor’s here centuries ago.
Uruguayan scientists and doctors arent’t looked down upon. They are embraced. Both for providing a better life for Americans, and for following the rules of the country they aspire to live in.
Immigrants are embraced and loved by Americans. It’s the felons we take issue with.
Crap. Can I point out my post took longer than 11 minutes to post? Serves me right for trying to put some thought in it. Either way, I think John Mace and I have the same idea behind the posts.
Not quite. Americans usually admire (legal) immigrants but are often resentful of those that don’t appear to fully assimilate-- especially those that struggle with English. And very few immigrants don’t want to learn English. It’s just that many are either too busy working to devote the time needed, or simply aren’t good at learning another language fluently-- something that is very difficult to do as an adult.
