My wife is an immigrant from a predominantly Muslim country. When she thinks about the fact her name will be on a list in the near future it angers her. She also sees how many Americans assume she is a 2nd class citizen. She worries her family will face difficulties in trying to visit us. You could perhaps be callous and say these worries are self-inflicted because nothing has actually happened, but how would you feel if millions of Americans happily voted for a person who normalized prejudice against some part of who you are?
The frustrating part is that these things you say conservatives don’t like about liberal policy don’t actually exist. (at least in any significant way). Sure, some of our schools are failing, and there are issues with our immigration policy. You can even have rational disagreements about levels of incarceration. However, once you start saying things like “Liberals want people to be uneducated, criminals on the streets and the borders open,” you’re fighting a right wing fantasy of a liberal.
It’s just hilarious how some of these political extremist idiots rail at the conservative fantasy, oblivious to the fact they are the polar opposite of exactly what’s got their knickers in a twist to begin with.
And they wonder how people can be so stupid.
At times there may be some truth to that, as you don’t often get conservatives saying we need to lock up women who have abortions, jail people for political expression, or ban a particular religion from entering the country. This year, we are quite justified in concluding the “conservative fantasy” and the Trump statements are pretty well aligned.
It’s not as though the President-elect has called for a total and complete ban on…
Yeah, we elected a real fuckwad.
He never did specify how he’d determine whom to ban- those who hail from Muslim areas who may not practice Islam would probably have to show their eagle and 'Murican flag tattoo. Her family has that, right?
All of which underscores the argument that they are impervious to facts and reason.
Stop saying racists and sexist shit and we’ll stop calling you out on it. It’s simple, really. Try it. See how it works out for everybody.
None of which is factually true. But as you’ve illustrated, time and again, facts and evidence don’t penetrate their thick skulls.
Stop casting conservatives in with Trump supporters. Plenty of conservatives happen to be thoughtful and intelligent people and many of them are openly critical of Trump and his views. As a liberal, I may not agree with certain conservative ideology but I don’t think all conservatives are stupid.
Sigene, UberArchetype, Starving Artist, and others explaining the election to the arrogant liberals: You’ve only described why conservatives voted for Trump. Nobody gives a shit that conservatives voted for Trump. Of course they voted for the Republican nominee. It’s expected.
When people discuss why Clinton lost the election, the topics of arrogance, hubris, etc are fitting for why the various groups that voted for Obama did not vote for Clinton.
The voting public decided to say “Kill anyone who isn’t white! Rape any woman you catch! Kill the unbelievers! Kill the gays! Kill the liberals! Burn the world for Jesus!”
