We 99ers--a Straight Dope Longtimers Poll & Scrapbook.

Hey! It’s my 1000th post! Whadya know.

Member #402 checking in - five years, one week, and one day. Don’t have much to add; most everything I remember (and some I didn’t) has been listed already.

Demo, the lovely TVeblen is now an IMHO mod, so yeah, I’d say she’s still around

Someone redecorated. What happened to the bean bag chairs?

Cat pee.

Don’t ask.

These new chairs are much lower maintenance.

Cats pee?

I thought they just prespired… Wow.

Mainly a lurker - assumed I’d have the lowest post count, but was under done by Jools! Had another name for a while, due to a glitch with my work computer, and I had a low post count with it too. Wonder if I’m the earliest Aus doper still around?

Has anyone mentioned M Masterton yet?

I had forgotten all about that! And Pimp Wars!

Many of the things you all are mentioning seem not so long ago, I guess time really does fly.

Hi!

I’m honestly not sure when I first joined the team, but it was back in the AOL days. I remember the boards before the advent of the push pins, and I could’ve sworn I read and posted to the AOL Straight Dope board before push pins, but maybe I just lurked during the pre-pin days. (Correct me if I’m wrong, but the old posts from before push-pins were all vaporized at the switchover, yes?)

Before push-pins there were no threads. You’d open the board and see individual posts in a list like this:

Why are there D and C and A batteries but no B batteries? [JKFabian]
Hey Cecil are you smarter than Marilyn vos Savant? [Dschaf2000]
Why are there D and C and A batteries but no B batteries? [HpstrDufuz]
What's the difference between good cholesterol and bad cholesterol? [WubbleChap]

But I found my first posts, August-September of 1997. And I found the first thread I ever started, “God is a CAT! A proof…” a thread parody of a half-dozen threads with titles like “Is God Really the Devil in Disguise?” / “God Exists, No Need Experiment” / “Does God Exist?” / “Does God Exist? Let’s try something new…” / “God DOES Exist–Proof” / “God Does NOT Exist, a Proof”, etc.

aol://5863:126/mB:59300:54753

and since it’s still extant (yes, that’s a live link if you have AOL), I guess that means I didn’t post to SDMB until after the pins had arrived.

I remember…

ARG had a predecessor. Jim Tull. Arrogant Bible-thumping fundamentalist spewing his stuff in every thread. Whoa baby. He had a lot to do with those “God” threads.

The “Snark” guy, gay Mormon with serious guilt issues. Kept cropping up with different usernames, and he came across to this board…SnarkHunter, Hypersnake, Hypersnark, names like that, remember him?

I remember Kiltgrrl. Kiltgrrrl. Kiltgrrrrl. However she spelled it. What the heck ever happened to her?

I don’t remember much about the earliest and most notorious trolls, like ~PerkyDan~, but I remember the meltdown of ** AmplSample** (she was an event right around the time I started posting, thin-skinned and would make personal attacks on anyone who disagreed with her – wow).

I remember ongoing in-jokes, the 1999 equivalent of 1920s-style death rays and fucko off –

“ass ass ass, as much as I want” (pertaining to freedom from censorship, I forget who said it first).

“insluted”, a legendary typo. heh heh.

I remember “Manny Peoples” – that wasn’t his user name, he was ZPhobiaZ or SZPhobiaZS, something like that.

I remember that the ubb software on this board was at first very hard to use. No “New Posts” button back then. Other things that made it awkward.

I co-hosted Staurday chats with Ranger Jeff during our last month or so at AOL.

Someone posted under the latter back in October and was immediately banned.

Jeez, don’t any of you old fogies remember Freak Freeley’s final freak? So sad when the mind goes.

And I would have been a 99er but I lurked for 6 months like a good newbie damnit!

http://fathom.org/teemingmillions/injokes.html ← this page has a bunch of the origins of things… Bermuda999 started the “ass ass ass” thing. Roshnee made the “insluted” typo.

Snark is still actively posting on a lot of boards, including Fathom.

Melis, aka Kiltgrrrl, aka KRFTMSTRSS or however it was spelled, has a livejournal here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/starcrossedlady/

Member 411 here. I originally just posted at and read the Comments on Cecil’s Columns forum. I remember pointing out an error in the manhole covers column, and describing Rouleaux triangles - I think I was the first to bring up that shape. Even when I started reading the other forums, I was terrified of the Pit for years - now it’s the forum I read first.

I used to read Cecil’s columns on AOL, but never posted in the forums back then.

I read all the JDT threads religiously as they were happening - they were a riot. I started reading the other forums just a little too late to have known Wally, but I read all the threads I could find after he died.

I remember WildestBill and the “Gotcha Ya” thread.

You were bug vomit? I loved bug vomit!

Wow. Quite a walk down memory lane. I posted a little bit at the AOL site, and toddled over here in time to be #731. Five years ago I was still married to my first wife, and we were talking about children.

Wow. Time really is a river…

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m glad this thread came up, because it inspired me to do a post search on myself tonight. My first thread is long gone, but there are quite a few early ones left. I re-read the postings by members who are long gone, who I had almost forgotten.

The walk down memory lane was fun. I anticipate more fun down the road, too.

What a great crowd you Dopers are. This board has been so good for me. It’s sharpened my debate skills, and even helped me better my critical thinking.

How are you doing searches to find your old posts? When I search for my username, the oldest stuff it seems to want to show is from 2002.

I was just about to ask the same thing. I only return a maximum of 500 results when I search for posts under my name, which is just about 10% of my total output. The oldest I get are from August 1999, but I’m sure I started posting earlier than that.

I would have been a 99er too if I didn’t take so long to get into the Internet, and lurk for a few months. I’m Doper #5677.

Heh. I started lurking in late 1999, but didn’t get my account until Jan 2000. So I’m not a '99er officially, just a wannabe; but I am a board veteran, and I do have a pretty low post count (just posted my 100th in the “Boards going subscription” thread).

Can’t compete with Joools, of course.
