One other memory: When I finally returned from my stupidity-induced hiatus, another poster jumped on me (I forget who). He or she had tried to register under the name “Sauron,” and was denied because the name was already taken. He or she was convinced it was a plot against him/her to not give out that name, because he/she had never seen anyone named “Sauron” post on the boards.
I remember that just about every year, there was a tremendous increase in “Hey DUDEZ whassup!” threads at semester break and the beinning of summer, resulting in at least one DNFTT post in almost every thread.
Ahh 1999… the year of my halcyon board youth. My first EVER post was in a thread about dirt on spinach. Wow… so long ago. Of course it would be a plant thread that would prompt me to join. I remember the board invasions. The Satan-ass thread. I remember bjorn who i loved to flame because he made it so easy. I also have made great friends here (Can’t believe for some of you it’s been almost 5 years!). I’ve changed a lot, post less, but now that i am paying i may post more (and hopefully less stupid threads will abound).
I was just 20 at the time i joined. I’ve grown and matured since then and have changed quite a bit i like to think. I am no longer the boy i was.
I am member 898, so i got in under the 1,000’s. We should get shirts… or at least commemorative plates.
Jeez, I remember all this shit too. I also remember when it was still legal to write “pulls up lawn chair, puts on suntan lotion and opens beer” type posts when a firestorm was about ignite. Some of them got quite elaborate and creative.
Jack Dean Tyler was a more recent phenom, but ranks up there with other memorable one trick ponies and trolls.
pulls up wheeelchair, secures Depends in place and opens can of Geritol
Another old timer checking in. Man I used to be a posting beast… then died off for about a year. Now I’m back again. In that perios where I dropped off everythign changed. Hell noone even remembers me anymore:)
I used to be a fixture in chat too. Yakkin is up with all the old cronies.
I was inspired by this thread and went cruising through some old threads in GQ. The number of banned posters is amazing. Also amazing is the number of links to various cites that no longer work.
When did the SD start on AOL, I used to be on AOHELL but I think that I was out of there before the SD got going.
I haven’t been posting much lately, but I still drop 'round. Many have mentioned a lot that I remember.
The board’s been through many epochs.
Remember Guy Stuff? The board doesn’t really do that sort of thing anymore. A lot of stuff we could do then is illegal now. I had an alter-ego (that I turned a dime on to TubaDear) named bug_vomit. How many folks got to be loverock? I believe I was the last incarnation of Former Agent (it was legal then - shoot, LSD was legal when I was a teenager).
I posted the first debate topic in GD, under the thread title A Credible Threat? It was a gun control thing that Slythe and Ex-Tank slugged out. It’s long since deleted.
And I’ve met a lot of folks from here over the years. And I’ve gone places I’d never been to meet folks - Dayton, Ohio? Thought I’d never get there.
I’m also a holdover from the AOL board. I joined there very early on, before JKFabian and TubaDiva became the first moderators. At that time Ed moderated the board, and I remember him posting and asking for applicants for people to help. I think JKFabian got the first spot, and then TUBADIVA (her AOL screen name was all caps) got drafted shortly thereafter.
I remember the George and Bob show (two long posters other have mentioned who seemed to disagree on everything, but couldn’t leave each other’s posts alone. I remember Ruda Duda, MPSIMS, and ageism. On this board, I’ve seen all the major comings and goings, even though I haven’t paid complete attention to all of them.
My first post on the AOL board was in response to a question about time zones, and how someone wondered whether if you started in the USA and counted 24 hours around the globe would you end up in China? I answered with facts and a little sarcasm, befitting (IMHO) the tone of a Cecil devoted board.
I don’t remember my first post on this board, it was probably in one of the “hello” type threads during the first few days of operation.
But, it’s possible I was on the AOL version. Here’s how it works…
I have the original Straight Dope book of 1984. I recently found it in a box of stuff I hadn’t opened til last month after leaving Houston in 1989. The week The Wall fell, actually.
I was on AOL from 1995 till 1999.
I participated in quite a few chat rooms and forums, since that was 1/3 of my entertainment in being online. Chat/Games/Free porn! (yes, I’ll admit it.)
I have long been a fan of myth debunking and nit picking.
When I found the Dope in answer to that damn duck quack e-mail (Oct of 2002), I thought I remembered the name from somewhere. Could’ve been the book, could’ve been the old AOL community.
So, maybe I posted on AOL Dope. I used several names on AOL. Snaykpuppi, Onynhedd, OKCDrWho, Shark and possibly some others. Any of those names ring a bell? My use of these names and my posting/chatting style was all over the place back then.
Regardless of AOL Doping, though, I’m glad I found this place as NoClueBoy
