We 99ers--a Straight Dope Longtimers Poll & Scrapbook.

Hey Opal!

>^,^<
Try searching for occurrences of “Cluemobile”

Wow thanks!

I went up to the top of the screen where it says “search”, clicked on “advanced search” and then typed my name in the box on the right side. I then used the drop-down menu to select “find posts started by user.” I leave all other boxes at default. On the seventh page, at the very bottom is my “Foul Language” thread.

It took me about an hour to finish this post, because I started reading threads again. I found that some of them have the posters’ names intact, while others have nothing but “guest”. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Yeah, I figured out how you were doing it. You were searching for “threads started by user” rather than “posts by user”.

I do know (or think I do) the “rhyme or reason” for when posts show up as Guest instead of displaying the username. I mean, I don’t know the specifics, but it’s dependent on date of the post, and I think I nailed down when “it” happened, whatever “it” was.

I don’t know, however, why the old threads “remember” who started them when they can’t “remember” who created the first post “as a post”, or subsequent posts from the same early era.

I was searching for “posts by Lissa” rather than “threads started by Lissa” which is why we were getting different results.

I joined in Dec. 1999. I had lurked for a long time and had been reading the columns on line since 96 or 97 - as soon as I discovered they were available and the minute my former employer put Internet access to every workstation. (Before that we had to sign up to use the one connected computer and it was in a far too public place to be reading non-work materials.) I couldn’t join the boards while it was on AOL because I didn’t have a home computer and AOL was blocked on my work computer, even after they gave us all Internet access. (Everyone on ISDN - we thought it was the fastest thing on earth!) Then in May '99 I changed jobs and at some point figured out the boards were not on AOL anymore and then joined.

This thread has brougt back a lot of memories. I wonder where some of those people went.

Please allow me to offer a belated, but sincere, thanks.

What’s up, neeners.

Somewhat of a slow player, here. But I’ve enjoyed the last five years. My most intense memory is surely the 9/11 thread, where I was getting a lot of my news that morning. It hurts to read it.

Well, waddya know… I’m a 99er! Break out the drinks!

Before, I had been on the USENET group since Sept. 94 (Since Nov. 94 as JRDelirious), but not being an AOL-er I had to wait it out. (And I have been a follower of Cecil since c.1980, compliments of the Baltimore City Paper) So as of this late Summer/early Fall I will have been at a.f.c-a 10 years and at SDMB 5 years.

It has been a heap of fun, truly. Or as much fun as any addiction can be

There have been many interesting posters who are no longer here but the ones I miss most are Wally and Satan. Strangely, I also miss Contestant#3 and some of the other contentious posters. They added spice. The sock-puppet wars were tedious at the time, but interesting in retrospect - especially all the guessing and second-guessing about who was really whom.

Thanks to all who’ve posted above for bringing back some worthwhile SD memories.

I’m really a courtesy 99er – I registered in 1999 but did not post until January 2000 - to answer a question in GQ about the Knights of Columbus, as I recall.

I remember Melin the poster; I joined after Melin’s term as a mod. And of course Phadreus – and FORMERAGENT!

My most treasured memory is relatively recent: the meltdown of Beryl_Mooncalf. That thread should be a case study in some psych class.

  • Rick

I’d just like to reiterate everything OldBroad said - thanks for the memories, folks.

I, like Bricker (hmmm…maybe the only thing we’ve got in common – kidding, Rick), joined in 1999 but did not post until 2000. Coldfire welcomed me to the board.

Let’s see…in 1999 I was living in Oxford, doing a full-time doctorate on the history of the English Bible in East Anglia, and temporarily stuck in a failing marriage. Now, three moves, two doctoral submissions, and one divorce later, I am living near Niagara Falls, working as a research assistant, and currently in a head-over-heels relationship with a beautiful lady Doper. I wouldn’t have traded the changes, especially the last, for the world.

And I still haven’t written anything here anywhere near as good as “J. Dean Tyler’s Church of Circumscientology” since 2000.

Well, I did a search and found the first thread that I ever posted in. (It was in the Pit, called “I hate vegatarians” [note spelling error]). I won’t link to it here because eh. The hamsters need a rest but if you want to find it it’s easy enough to do so. It was a kick reading that thread, and I must say, I miss VegForLife.

Aw, I miss Sqrlcub. Even his ban-inducing thread amused me.

Foofy blond hair, heh. Circumcision. The Former Agent. The person from Iceland who should not be named (I wonder how many old wackos this thread will invoke from the netherworlds?) versus Coldfire ALL THE TIME.

Little Johnny Cthulu’s X-mas wish, or however it was called. Does Fenris still post? God, there was another terribly good and funny writer in addition to him, whose name I can’t recall. . .

There have been so many thread’s I’ve laughed my ass off. I have a continuing phobia that someone will arrive at the board and from my posts figure out who I am and find lots of horrible admissions about me.

It’s been swell.

No one has mentioned Falcon yet.

Or me for that matter.

Ha. The oldest thread of mine I can find is one dated 04-27-1999 where I pit myself, because I’ve always been that lame. I remember what sparked (ha!) it, too; a debate about the potential harmful effects of marijuana smoking. I felt bad because I had an opinion and dared to defend it. :stuck_out_tongue: And I was sure Lissa hated my guts, too. My inner 11 year old is sure she’s still mad at me. :o Anyway, I avoid the situation now by keeping my opinions to myself, hence the huge drop-off in posting.

Sorry about the bump, but I’m just tickled several shades of pink to be able to say that once again, I’m active with ID# 41.

I don’t remember you… :frowning: I’m #36

I’m User #157

There are two posters that I remember (and miss)

neuro-trash grrrl

and

PurpleCrackwhore

I wonder what ever happened to them?

PCW has an LJ now. She’s still kickin’. I miss the heck out of neuro. She could flame better than any of 'em!
