I think it’s incredibly amusing that people are pissing on the show after just one episode, especially when I look at some of the absolute shit out there that gets 4 and 5 star reviews. You’re always going to be able find something to bitch about if that’s what you want to do. I started off by saying that I don’t normally like sitcoms - and I don’t. So the mere fact that I enjoyed it is telling as far as I’m concerned. Sure the story was less than completely believable and so were the characters, but maybe you missed the part where we said this was a sit…com.
The real issue is, as you say, what they do with it from here. How do they develop the characters and the relationships. Is it going to be a lot of one-dimensional bullshit, which is fine if it’s funny 1D bullshit or is there going to be some depth that makes you give a shit about the characters. The point is there are several ways this could go where this could be a very entertaining show and to write it off after the pilot especially with this cast is either arrogant or ignorant.
Or based on what was put before us. You are asking us to praise a show that you like that a lot of people thinks sucks, based on the case. Sorry, but it sucks. I’ll give it another go after a while, but based on the merits of what was actually put before us, it sucks.
Picasso put out over 100,000 signed works. Some of them were the best masterpieces of his age. But most of them just sucked and were little ditties to pay bar tabs. I’ve got a friend who has one on his bathroom wall. Whoop de do.
To mistake discerning taste for ignorance or arrogance is in this case high praise. If a show on Broadway sucks like WAM on opening night, there isn’t a second night. For a reason. The reason being: it sucks.
Right, because Picasso was author of literary works that depended on plot and character development over time so we can see that this analogy is completely apposite. I guess in your case I have to go with ignorant then.
edit: and btw, where did I ask anyone to praise anything? I said it was asinine to piss on the show this early in the game - which it is.
I’d also say that I’m perfectly well aware that even well established actors can make shit shows. Just look at Robin Williams new project - not that I ever liked him anyway, but from I understand that is a hopelessly derivative piece of shit that probably won’t even make it to mid-season. So maybe this will in fact turn out to be a dog. I’m just saying that to make a snap judgement after one episode that wasn’t really that awful, even if you want to try to pretend that it was, is just fucking stupid.
That’s not what “opinion” means where anyone comes from. Your OP asked “What did you think?” and people have told you what they thought. If you didn’t want to hear it then you shouldn’t have asked.
I don’t give a shit what people think, but if I have to read posts that just basically say ‘it sucked’ then yeah, I’m going to complain about that. But at least I’m extending you the courtesy of giving you a cogent explanation for WHY it annoys me - which is better than anyone in this thread is doing for proving, a priori, why the show, after just one episode, can be nothing but an unmitigated disaster.
What are you - five? Do I really have to explain what that means in this particular context? I’m interested in hearing intelligent critiques of the show. Since no one here seems to know what that means, allow me to explain. It means covering what you think are its strong and weak points and explaining why each falls into that particular category.
Before coming here I was a fairly uncritical viewer and I’d like to change that but I don’t really have any background to build on. I read a great deal but virtually no fiction. And while tv and cinema probably doesn’t rise to the level of literature for the most part, I’m hoping to develop some sort of tool box for determining whether certain things are worth my time.
I’m still going to like the stuff that I like, but I want to have some idea how to judge the things I like.
Well, we can half agree on that. The new Robin Williams show is even worse. It was just fucking stupid. As was WAM. And unlike Shalhoub, Robin Williams has even more awards, and an Oscar. He is an incredible talent, like Shalhoub, who took on a project whose initial episode was horrifyingly bad. Neither displayed the directing and writing talents of 2 Broke Girls, both of which are Kat Dennings boobs. At least I can watch her chest on that show.
Hey, if you can’t admit that you like what you like, then you’re just a poseur and you may as well just admit it and move back into your mama’s basement because that’s where you really belong. Being on your own means having a spine and having a spine means not being afraid to admit that your taste is occasionally/often/mostly shit.
I think whether or not you personally liked a show is not the best test for an actor’s taste in projects. Shaloub picked a series that garnered him multiple awards, ran for 8 seasons and probably made him a ton of cash. I like Monk. I haven’t seen every episode. It was never a must watch show. But, I thought it did what it set out to do very well, and the cast did a pretty good job with the silly plots they were given. Then again I liked Murder, She Wrote, too.
Now as far as We Are Men goes I probably won’t watch it again. The first episode was aggressively mediocre. Maybe this is one of those slow growing shows that finds their footing later on. It is possible; the cast is talented. I just can’t see how they will make that happen. The characters were just too uninteresting for me. I’ll wait and if people tell me it got to that comedic high point I will come back.
deltasigma, you’re acting like a jerk here. Knock it off. If you don’t like what people are saying, the thing to do is steer the conversation in a different direction - not insult them for doing it wrong.
That was directed at anyone in particular although in hindsight I can see how it could have been read that way especially in light of some of the exchanges we’ve had in this thread. I also imagine that the warning probably wasn’t prompted solely by that comment so this post shouldn’t be construed as protesting it either.
Missed the first episode, just watched the 2nd. I thought I was watching a rerun of *Men of a Certain Age, *and that’s no compliment. Even Shalhoub’s talent couldn’t save this dreck. If I have to force myself to watch the entire show, it doesn’t get a second chance.
And by the way, *Monk *was one of my favorite shows; I recently watched all the episodes for the first time since the original run. Sure, there were a few clunkers, but at some point in the future I’ll watch them all again.
