We Are One of Those: FedEx Package Stolen From Front Door

I thought you had to sign for a computer and that is was not just left on your steps .
Someone on another forum had to sigh for a computer and they didn’t buy it . Their credit card info was stolen . It a crazy story !

A couple of years ago I had ordered a new laptop, was watching the package tracking, and worked from home the day it was supposed to be delivered. At one point I was heading towards the bathroom when out of the corner of my eye I saw movement on the front porch through the front window. It was the FedEx driver heading back down the driveway to the truck. I went to the front door and there was one of those “missed delivery” stickies on the front door. They didn’t knock, didn’t ring the bell, never even attempted to deliver it!

The delivery drivers here always knock, which is great. Our old postal guy (who always knocked when there was a package) retired and the woman who delivers now will just drop a package on the porch and continue on her way. She doesn’t even try to put it out of sight, which is very easy to do on our porch. But then she’s so fucking busy babbling into her blue tooth, I’m surprised she can manage to get things to the right addresses.

I have the two large dogs doorbell system. They feel obligated to let me know when the mailman stops, or there is a delivery, or a dog walks down the street, or a jogger, or someone pushing a baby stroller, or leaves blow across the yard, It makes them feel useful - though sometimes they fall asleep on the job and a package gets delivered without proper notification.

Interesting. My driver always knocks. LOUD. Just once, but enough to scare the cats. I registered with UPS MyChoice. Now, when things ship UPS, I get an email. If I’m not going to be home the day it’s due to arrive, I change the destination to the UPS store. It’s kind of a pain to have to make another stop. Especially since the UPS store nearest me is at a 4 way stop behind a busy hospital (38th St), but there have been a rash of stolen packages in my neighborhood (north of UT between Lamar & Guadalupe), so I’d rather deal with that crap than the stolen package crap.

Of course one neighborhood in Chicago had to take it to the next level - three delivery drivers have been held a gunpoint in the last 9 days. All of them were mugged of personal items and two of them also had undelivered packages stolen.

I thought my area was mostly OK until I had a measly little box from Lush stolen within 15 minutes of delivery a couple years ago. Being in a neighborhood full of apartment buildings and 2-flats, drivers never ring bells or knock or whatever because there really are a ton of deliveries and not enough time to wait for answering doors. I have everything delivered to work any more, it’s a pain to take heavier stuff home but better than tracking packages down.

Oh yeah, the other fun thing is apparently the Amazon Now drivers who don’t understand how addresses work. Odd numbered addresses are always on the east side or south side of all streets. So 6577 and 6576 are NEVER next door and ALWAYS across the street from each other. I keep getting deliveries for across the street, as my front door serves 6577 and 6575, but the boxes are for 6576. Such a pain in the ass. At least the two neighbors I’ve had to take stuff over to have been super nice. They likely also got two of everything because I don’t take things over there until a box has been sitting for a couple days unclaimed and I finally look at the address printed on it.

Sounds like the thief in their case was a) really really stoopid, or b) lived or could lurk nearby and was hoping to swipe the package off the front steps.

And yeah, I’m a little surprised that the computer wasn’t sent with signature required.

I’ve got you all beat. OUR UPS and FED EX drivers put packages against the storm door, so that we can’t open the door to bring them in.

My last two computers (a netbook and 4 years later a laptop) were dropped off w/o a signature. Mind you, they weren’t high end in any way.

My mailman usually delivers my Amazon packages. If it’s big he’ll honk at the street and wait for me to come out. If it’s small, he’ll pt it in my car (which is always unlocked and he knows it). He’ll put it beside my side gate if I’m not home. And there have been times where something has come in after he’s left on his route, and he drops it off on his way home, because he goes past my farm.

The hell do you live, Camelot?

When we first built our house in 2000 the post office was literally right around the corner (it’s a small town, with a flashing yellow light) and when I went to set up delivery they said we lived too close, that I’d have to get a box. To which I responded that the box should be free. The clerk harrumphed at me, looked up the regulations, and confirmed that I was entitled to a free P.O. Box since the post office wouldn’t deliver to my house.

They’ve since moved a bit farther down the road to a larger facility, but we still get the free box.

We left a message with the sheriff substation and will sit tight with NewEgg.

Has Travis McGee heard about this?

Almost - Rural Tennessee.

I was a rural mail carrier. We did things like that.

Come Christmas time, we were well rewarded.

I’ve mentioned this in a couple of threads, but one year, around Christmas, a UPS driver ‘delivered’ a rather expensive telescope, intended as a present for my sister, as follows: he left the package on wet ground, in the dark, behind a guardrail next to a busy highway, at the bottom of their quarter-mile long driveway (she was renting a house on a farm). It was a freakin’ miracle we managed to find it before it got wrecked or walked off.

You all make me feel so fortunate.

FedEx and UPS both know my gate code, drive down to my place and hand the packages over, asking for signatures most times. We usually jaw a bit about neighborhood happenings before they go on their way. Might could be because I invite them to hunt my land during the seasons, if they wish.

My postie actually calls me and asks me to leave the gate open so she can deliver packages into my hands. (She’s nervous about the gate, afraid it might close while she’s down here and not reopen when she needs to exit.) I am happy to oblige. I helped her with her taxes one year and she’s become more than an acquaintance.

Sorry about the theft, ivylass. That’s a real pain. :frowning:

Mama Plant was from Dyersburg. Very beautiful countryside.

Well, is my face red. Despite having our street address the package ended up at our post office. I checked my mail today and they had left a key to a bigger box they use when the package won’t fit in our box.

It was addressed to Ivylad, and lo and behold, it was my son’s laptop! How FedEx figured out to go to the post office and not leave it on our front door eludes me.

It’s a Christmas miracle! (And yes, we will be calling NewEgg and telling them we don’t need a replacement.)

Just tell them that to be safe, they should deliver it to your good friend, Carnivorousplant.
I will make a donation to the ivylass retirement fund.
