I have a package coming. FedEx made a First Attempt yesterday and will try again today. Unless he shows up when I am home for lunch, he will miss me again. If I knew when he will be here I could stay home and wait for him, but I can’t just take the whole day off (and that would be stupid anyway). The website and the 800 number can confirm only that he will make another attempt today, which I already knew from the Door Tag he left yesterday. I can’t get a Customer Service Rep on the phone, just this voice-activated thing that confirms that he will make another attempt today, which I already knew from the Door Tag he left yesterday.
Why is this so hard? I assume he needs my signature, but he didn’t check the box on the Door Tag to indicate that I could just sign the Door Tag and leave it on the door. Why do FedEx and UPS not have a way of informing me (or you) that they’re coming so that I don’t miss them the first time? What a waste of their time! They must have to try at least twice with most of their deliveries.
Sign the tag anyway, and put it back on the door. Add a note saying “Fedex Please Leave Package” in giant letters. That’s what I’ve always done, and they’ve always left the package.
We live in what is considered a safe area, so packages are always left on our porch. Since I’m home all day now, I’ve come to realize that neither FedEx nor UPS will knock or ring when leaving a package. If I don’t see the truck in my driveway, I won’t know a delivery was made. I guess pushing the doorbell button would slow them down too much…
Same here. I order little stuff from Amazon here and there, but have *never *caught the UPS guy in action. I think he just slows down when he gets near our address and chucks packages toward the front porch.
DHL likes to leave my stuff in front of the garage in the rain. After they’ve opened and closed it 14 times (it’s overseas from Germany), using scotch tape to reseal it, and tossed it around the warehouse approximately 300 times. Once I barely got it inside before the entire package dissolved into mush.
UPS leaves packages in the same spot, in slightly better condition. They also don’t knock.
UPS also has a phone number that you can call and tell them to hold it at their office where you can pick it up. Of course, this works better if you live reasonably close to the office, as I do, albeit on the other side of a $5 toll bridge.
FedEx had a package that needed signature for me. The truck pulls up to the gate (the house is 600 feet beyond), reads the sign with “For Deliveries Call XXX-XXX-XXXX” in VERY LARGE Letters, then puts a sticky on it that they missed me. I find the sticky that night on my way OUT (I’d been home all day waiting for the package) and spend the evening and next morning on the phone having them explain to me how I should leave my gate unlocked and wide open so the driver can drive up to my house. I was LIVID.
Next day, I work right next to the gate so I can see when the truck comes. Truck pulls up, I make b**chy comment about them not having a cell phone. Driver looks at the sign and says of course he’d call the number if I hadn’t been there. Swears up and down that he wasn’t the driver the day before.
So, I tell every vendor that tries to use FedEx that if they want to sell their stuff, they need to figure out how to send it by US Mail. I hate FedEx and UPS both (UPS throws my packages out into my neighbor’s field and calls that delivered)
Is there a Fedex Office (formerly known as Kinko’s) that’s near your home or work? You can call up 1-800-GO-FEDEX, give them your tracking# and/or door tag# and request that they hold your package at that location for you to pick up. It’s free, and they’ll hold the package for up to 5 business days. The Fedex Office will will even call you (if your# is on shipping label) when the package arrives at their store.
In the future, you can have your Fedex packages delivered directly to that store and you won’t have to worry about being home to sign for it (or whether or not they’ll leave it at your door). FYI, even if you leave a note, the driver may still not leave the package at his own discretion (especially if the item has a high declared value). Your note might say it’s OK, but when the package goes missing, the company’s the one on the hook.
BTW - When calling the 800#, it will start out voice automated. Just say “Speak with a Rep”, and it will connect you to someone with a pulse.
Yes, I used to work for Kinko’s which became Fedex Kinkos which then became Fedex Office.
I understand that it’s frustrating, but to be honest, i don’t think they should have to call your phone just to get up to your front door and make the delivery. If you have a gate 600 feet from the front of your house, you need an intercom or some other system for your visitors, or you could leave the gate unlocked on the days that you’re expecting a delivery.
FedEx hates to come to our house. I don’t know why; it’s a beautiful drive . The previous driver would just tell his office he had tried to deliver even though he hadn’t been anywhere nearby. At one point, when a highly-anticipated package failed to appear and I called the customer service office, it turned out that he had claimed to attempt delivery at the exact moment UPS had been delivering a different package. The FedEx office made him drive all the way back out here with the delivery, and we never saw him again.
I go out of my way now to buy from companies who use either UPS or USPS. My opinion of FedEx is in line with Gatopescado’s.
The phone means they can reach me no matter where I am (e.g. in the barn, in a field, or in the house.)
It is far better that someone phone me to come to the gate instead of them come on the farm and have to ‘explain’ their presence to the two 120 pound dogs that are on the farm for protection.
As I said, I won’t buy from people who ship fedex now, so it isn’t a problem any more.
I switched to having most stuff delivered to me at work, unless it’s something really big that would be awkward to carry home. When I ordered wine it required a signature and ID, so having it come to work was the only option. That day I made sure to bring my little luggage wheely! I’m glad I work someplace where I can do that.
A handy tip I’ve learned…when you get the voice-activated attendant, if you say “Representative,” you will be transferred to an actual person. I do this all the time at work (we use FedEx for most shipments).
I’ve used this option. And UPS has a similar deal, in which they will leave the package at the nearest UPS Store location, but they charge five bucks to do so.
I’ll admit I’m a bit perplexed. I also live somewhere gated and am never home, but I’ve also never had an issue logging into their website with my tracking number and rerouting the delivery to Kinko’s after the first delivery attempt, so I can swing by and get it at my leisure. I do this every time I order wine, since I’ll never be home to sign for it.
