You’ve got it!! I lost my 14 year old Dec 23, 2000. I have the same lump in my throat reading your post. I know how badly it hurts. Your kitty is young so we must keep the faith in the power of prayer!
Cadolphin - I’ve been maintaning my cat Luna on Sub-q fluids for about 4 months. I can do it all myself. In fact, it seems that the daily meds are more stressful to her than the fluid therapy. She gets 1/2 a pepcid and aluminum hydroxide gel (another anti-acid). I, too, blame myself because I saw her lousing weight and tried a couple of courses of dewormer before I got her to the vet. But (fingers crossed) she’s doing okay on the meds and fluid and KD food. In fact, she’s more affectionate now because she’s handled so much. I got her from folks that didn’t give her any attention, and she was never affectionate before. I feel very grateful that she doesn’t hold a grudge.
All this to say, you’ve done your best by Shea, and that’s all anyone can do. {{{hugs and prayers}}} for your family, both human and animal.

UPDATE:
I’ve gone over the cliffs of insanity. Maybe not…but I’ve NEVER even thought about doing a happy “crappy” dance but I am this morning!!!

Princess Shae hadn’t been able to poop for 5 days. We’ve been so worried abt all those poisons on top of her kidneys… That was one reason we took her into the dr. on Sunday, but he told us the same thing the dr did on Thurs about her “build-up” and that is she’s to weak for an enema.
But abt 3.5 hrs ago, she gave us a very special present… 3 tiny little brown balls.
There is something seriously wrong with me… I got SO excited!
Yeah, I know it’s not much, but it’s something!

StG Keep up the good job with Luna! I’ve read many accounts on the internet where cats have lived years with CRF. I added Luna to my prayers last night and will continue to do so. I so hope for you she’s one of the ones that can still have a good long life inspite of the sub-q!!!
We’ve only known abt Shae’s kidneys for 2 months. Our doc prescribed aluminum hydroxide gel last week, but we weren’t able to find it at any of the drug stores we tried. When he prescribed it, he said it was an OTC anti-acid that we could find at any pharmacy/drug store.
Rico got frustrated and asked a pharmacist at the last store he went to and was told that they don’t make it anymore since there’s been some problems with aluminum. I can’t remember exactly what Ric related he said but I think that’s an accurate reader’s digest version of what he was told.
We didn’t have time to call the vet and tell him what we’d found out and see if he knew another way we could get it before she crashed.
The doc said she wouldn’t make it past tomorrow at the latest. Sometimes she looks like she’s so worn out that he might be right. BUT she is so much stronger then she was.

I don’t want to set myself up for a harder fall but overall, it’s so difficult for me to believe the dr is right this time. My little girl is just like her Mommy. She’s a FIGHTER/SURVIVOR and I’m proof that can get you through things that would have killed someone else.
Please keep those prayers, etc coming! I’m SURE that’s a big part of her success.

Cadolphin - My niece works for Walgreens and they special-ordered it for me. It’s very inexpensive - $6 for a 12 oz bottle, I think, and I only give her 2 ccs per night. If you need some, let me know - I’d be glad to send some to you. I hope it’s not too late.

Cadolphin, My guys: Sammy, G’Kar and Londo are pulling for your little Shae. They are eating extra kitty snacks to make her strong and being extra cuddly to make her comfortable. And for my bit I am eating an extra slice of pizza and thinking of kitties.
cadolphin, hang in there.
i helped take care of a very sick kitty this summer, the only thing she would eat was fancy feast. i was getting quite desp. for her to eat something… anything… i would actually feed it to her on a fork. the cans with gravy were the most populaur. give it a try if you can.
winken the wonderful and i are hoping and praying.
Oh, cadolphin… I hope your kittybaby pulls through. I can’t imagine losing one of our three.
Shea is beautiful. I’m sure she is a sweet kitty.
Zoe, Samantha, Stella and I will all be sending our best thoughts to your little one.
rocking chair, when I went to the store tonight, I saw cans of Fancy Feast on sale and bought a few of them.
I opened one, emptied it into a bowl, and brought it into the bedroom where Shae was, expecting to feed her with a spoon.
I could hear very clearly: “Spoon? We don’t need no steekin’ spoon!” and Shae stuck her nose in the bowl and scarfed up about half the can before we could tell her to slow down!
She’s still picking at it, so I guess we scored big time! Thank you ever so much for the suggestion!
Ric and Kathy
I hope your kitty’s doing well today. I had a moment to peruse your website and you look like such a wonderful family. I guess it’s true – love can happen anytime, anyplace, anywhere…kitties included!
You have my prayers with your sweet little girl.

** StGermain** if we can stablize her, I’d love to take you up on your offer. Thank you very much!
Yesterday was such a great day! Today, we’ve already rushed her to the vet on an emergency. She had bleed alot sometime during the night. I found it dried on her fur, soaked on the backsides of two pillows, down the wall and a puddle on the floor. But the dr. couldn’t find what caused it. It’s the biggest, wierdest mystery. He had no idea what happened. But she wasn’t bleeding anymore.
She’s extremely lethargic again. Has a glazed look to her eyes again. She’s eatten a tiny bit of the fancy feast thank you very much rocking chair and I think the wet food might have helped her present us with a real poo poo today.
But she’s so weak she had to lay down in the litterbox by the time she got to it (i’ve moved it closer) and then she laid down again in it after using it. i’ve moved her food and water back to the bed since she was laying by her bowls.
The doc told us, again, to bring her home, make her comfortable, spoil her to pieces, feed her whatever she wants and continue hydrating her.
Kathy
goodness… that is so scary. are y’all thinking transfusion?
i’m glad the fancy feast worked. perhaps the beef and liver kind for more iron?
winken the wonderful and i will keep up the healing thoughts and prayers. give her a gentle nose rub for me.
I totally expected she’d get a transfussion…I don’t understand why he didn’t do that. He didn’t directly respond when I asked him about it. GRRRRRRRRR
Animal transfusions aren’t nearly as common as people transfusions, though I know it’s done. It could be that he doesn’t want to do it on a cat that seems to be dying already; I don’t think there are too many kitty donors out there. HOWEVER, he SHOULD have given you a straight answer about that.
Poor kitty! Spoil her rotten while you’ve got permission. (As if we cat-owned people NEED permission. g) I’m sure she’s getting all sorts of virtual pets from here, from me included.
Thank you for explaining that whiterabbit. I understand better now.
Kathy
Shae has had an uneventful day. Considering the past few days I think this is a good thing. Not as good as her good day, but clearly not as bad as some of her other days.
She has been more lethargic today. Slept more, eaten less and just been more quiet. Considering her lack of interest in these basic needs, I can tell it’s not as bad as it has been because that vacant, nobody-is-home look that she’s had in her eyes on the very bad days hasn’t been there today. Her eyes are clear and looks alert. Looks extremely tired too.
Please keep those prayers and good thoughts coming her way. I will forever be grateful for that one really good day she had a couple days ago. I’m sure love et. al is what is keeping her comfortable.
We tried to give her some Frosty from Wendy’s last night. She turned it down. I let it sit a little bit in case she wasn’t hungry right then, or it was to cold for her…but she refused it all together. Go figure! Who woulda thunk that of my daughter.
Hugs,
Kathy
I’m soooo glad that your kitty seems better.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed for you!
WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO
:: HAPPY DANCES ::
Today seems to be the best day so far.
Shae has been staying in the bedroom and I’ve been staying with her. She’s been to weak to go very far and we’ve had to move the food, water and litterboxes as close to the bed as possible. Either on it on right beside it.
While I was in the kitchen getting her Fancy Feast, I turned around to take it back to the bedroom and there in the doorway between the den and the kitchen was the sweetest little white face! She walked all the way in there all by herself!
Plus she was still strong enough to insist I “put the fancy feast down and step away Mommy” :;
I fixed her some tuna water while she was eatting. She drank some of that too. She started to look really tired all of a sudden so I picked her up and took her back to the bed, then got her food and tuna water and put it on the bed.
Daddy came home shortly after that and we sub-Q her and she rested. After her rest, she got up and walked out the bedroom door again. She’s here in the den sleeping at the end of the couch were she used to spend her time with me previous to her kidney failure.
:: HAPPY DANCES FOR EVERYONE ::
Thank you so much everyone for your assistance in getting her to this point.
Of course, I don’t know how long it will last, but I’m excited she’s got a spring in her jump when she jumped on the bed and she is strong enough to walk in here, not once but twice and wants to be where she spent her time before coming sick… getting out of the “sick room”.
If she were to pass tonight, she would have had a great day and that’s something that can’t ever be discounted.
Kathy
whoa!!! that is fantastic! i hope she keeps improving. that fancy feast is mighty stuff!
YAY!!!
