I know we just had that “spectacular attack” thread . . . But these ass-hatted comments by Shelby yesterday really got my goat:
WASHINGTON (AP) – Sen. Richard Shelby, an eight-year veteran of the Senate Intelligence Committee [oxymoron alert!], warned Americans on Sunday to expect another major attack from al-Qaida terrorists. “Oh, absolutely. It’s going to happen,” Shelby said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” . . . In an interview a week ago, Shelby noted a rise in intercepted communications that suggest terror strikes, along with the bin Laden tape, as possible harbingers of a new attack. He spoke with more certainty Sunday. “I think it will be spectacular,” he said. “Will it be on the order of the World Trade Tower or the Pentagon? I hope not.”
As far as I’m concerned, Sen. Shelby has done more to terrorize US citizens than al-Qaida is doing. Any chance of getting him tried for terrorism?
Personally, I don’t care for most of Shelby’s political positions. However, on the three occasions that I have visited his office in D.C., his staff has been professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. Easily the best staff I have dealt with.
His office walls are decorated with enlargements of various cartoons that the news media has printed of him over the years. Somebody there has a sense of humor, if not Shelby himself (and that’s hard to imagine) then one of the staffers.
