4.4 southeast of Moab, UT. I’m in Grand Junction, CO.
The house acted like it was going over a bump, the windows rattled, and the cat startled. It wasn’t much; I grew up in SoCal and have been though several, including the Sylmar quake. My daughter in Delta, CO didn’t feel a thing, and my dogs did not wake up!
How often do quakes hit Eastern UT and Western CO?
I grew up in the northeast and have been in the San Francisco for a few years now. The first time I felt an earthquake it was like, wow, the ground is not supposed to move! It was disconcerting at first. Now, of course, I’m used to it.
I used to live in California and have been in 2 major quakes. My room mate was driving to pick me up during one and didn’t feel it! I got in the car and said we just had a major quake and she gave me a weird look and said her steering is going out ( the car pulled to the left)… then she flipped on the radio and said and now my radio isn’t working! It was funny in a way…talk about 2 realities… she’s mad about something being wrong with the car and I’m going OMG no radio and realizing that the quake was real bad. She didn’t believe me until we stopped at 7-11 and half the store was on the floor.
A little earthquake safety tip…never go up or down stairs during one. The steps can shift and open and trap you between them if they shift back.
I live in Washington state now and the people here freak out if we have a 2.5. They will actually close down schools and government offices. Although we do have active volcanos. Personally I would rather deal with earthquakes instead of tornados or huricanes.
Where I lived in California we had an average of 60+ per day. Most were small and unnoticed by most people. I started researching it because we had a cat that seemed to predict them. We had a major one and for a week before she was doing this really weird stuff…like staring and listening to the floor. We had 7 cats…she was the only one.
After the quake she was doing it again and we had a strong aftershock. So we started writing down when she did this stuff… I would call USGS the next day and she was right every time… The more she did it, the stronger the quake. I had mentioned it at work and my co-workers humored me and said to let them know if she acted up. Well guess what…she did… and from how she was acting it was going to be fairly good one…so I told everyone. They laughed and gave me a bad time. Well Satoshi predicted a 5.6 which hit that night along with several pre and aftershocks. The next day their attitude had changed…“if she ever does that again…you will tell us right…” I took alot of courage and belief in my cat to speak up about it, but I’m glad I did.
We felt that she either heard or felt the early vibrations (certain fish (like Oscars) will kill themselves before a major quake). What was interesting was that she developed hyperthyroidism a few years later. After having her thyroid radiated she never did it again,
