We need a  smiley!

They never have before, and I’ve used them whenever I felt the urge. Sometimes rolleyes says all that needs to be said…or all that can be said outside of the Pit.

I haven’t either, but though I try I haven’t read every thread so wouldn’t be surprised if it had come up.

Also, my post was a reaction to a perceived undercurrent (possibly only by me) that we shouldn’t have the rolleyes smiley because it was tantamount to an outside-the-pit snark.

Slightly less obnoxious yellow rolleyes, relative to old rolly. I suppose I could increase its size.

The only person expressing that idea is Measure for Measure, and he’s had a hardon against the rolleyes smiley forever. Sure, rolleyes is often used as a swift, contemptuous dismissal rather than taking time to make a detailed response. Sure, it’s probably overused. Nevertheless, it’s been part of the board as a native feature since forever, and it’s still theoretically a native feature.

The problem, as this thread and others have repeatedly stated, is the current emoticon known as “rolleyes” does not display a semblance of the facial display of rolling one’s eyes. Vbulletin made flaming asses of themselves with this emoticon set. Honestly, while the vacant-eyed smile is kinda creepy and the big grin smile is too… whatever, most of these smilies do at least convey the expression they represent. Arguably “cool” doesn’t say cool to me, so that’s pretty bad. But I never used a cool smiley anyway, so that’s not much loss to me. “Embarrassed” is an improvement (unless you liked using it as a blowjob smiley). But rolleyes was frequently used to indicate sarcasm or irony, and I’d often drop it after my own ironic comments for that purpose.

This thing  is bizarre, it doesn’t really convey a roll of the eyes in disdain, the pupils might or might not be a little mad, the offkilter grin is more a contemplative evaluation of something hard to express or with no solid opinion rather than a smirk of disdain.

And no, I don’t really appreciate any of Measure’s attempts because all his attempts start with a faulty premise, that the old rolleyes was too harsh and needed to be toned down. No, it correctly displayed the emotion it was set to represent.

But really, does anybody here recall the smileys we had before vBulletin? I seem to recall there was a bit of annoyance at the vB smileys over the “old” ones. But that was an eternity ago.

So, um, you’re saying I was reacting to Measure for Measure’s hardon? Okay then, I’m, well, I’m not going to touch that, and especially not going to use the eek or embarrassed smiley (not that there’s anything wrong it it).

I agree with you on the cool one too. I referred to Tom Cruise as an insult. Granted, he was the epitome of cool in Risky Business, but is now a couch-hopping, South Park caricature of that. But even though he’s not quite ‘cool’, it still conveys most of what the original did, unlike smirky. Really, all you need to do is slap that smarmy smirk off its face and we’d be back in business (that was too seconds in paint).

Nah, only since 2004.

(I only took notice of rolleyes after I noticed that Mr. Dubious was a milder version of the same. And that occurred months after he was introduced to the board.)

To be clear though, I don’t think //Old Rolleys// was all that awful, only generally nonconstructive (which you seem to agree) and potentially improvable.

But you know what vB was after. They’re trying to provide aids to conversation, rather than accurate embodiments of snark. Part of the problem was that the graphic artists decided to get creative, which is their wont. They’ve basically dropped the rolleyes concept and substituted what’s been crudely characterized as ::upskirt:: .

To be honest, the smilie I really didn’t like was //Old winky//. I think the new guy is an improvement: he’s less corny though methinks the overall fuzzy template could be better.

Huh. Not bad.

:dubious: Do you honestly expect the unwashed heathens of the Internet to match the acumen of a professional writer who’s spent decades honing his craft?

For what it’s worth, some of the new smileys are welcome improvements. :o an :stuck_out_tongue: look much better than the emoticons they replaced, in fact the old ones looked so dumb that I never used them. I’m also glad that  has been fixed so it doesn’t throw off the text height nearly as much. is badly designed, does look less angry than before (in fact, now it looks like someone attempting to pass a brick-sized turd) and while  tends to invoke “Just found out what Tubgirl means!” instead of merely expressing unnamed horror, I can live with that one.

But  has simply got to go; or at least, the board should allow inline images so we can insert our own custom smileys to supplant it. Not that I expect any mods to heed our objections, of course. //old rolleyes//

More modifications made in GIMP.

The 2nd one is better I think, though it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. He might be a little too pensive.

I never noticed it before, but the oversized front teeth and the squinty eyes make the new ‘grin’ smiley look like an Asian caricature you’d expect to find on a racist site.

At least it’s grinning though; we still have no rolleyes:(

Well, yes, but, also, Cecil is allowed to directly insult his questioners.

Exactly. The other new smileys are all acceptable, being either slightly better or only slightly worse than their predecessors., however, is an abomination, and removes an important aspect of teh board’s functionality.

Inline images would definitely be something I’d support. This is one of the few boards I know of that doesn’t allow them, and it seems a little bit of an odd constraint. No images in signatures/no avatars, sure, but no images in posts? Is this about copyright/image leeching concerns or more bandwidth of the user?

Neither. It’s about a) the tone of this board and b) the inevitability of its abuse here. (NSFW, etc.) But (a) isn’t really it: being able to post inline charts and graphs would be helpful.

Images are allowed in marketplace.

IIRC, there’s a greasemonkey script for inline images, but greasemonkey has not taken the board by storm.
