We’re lucky there’s a Family Guy!

Does anybody here ever watch Family Guy? I can often find a marathon at night when I’m unwinding from the day.

Despite some really annoying things (like cutaways to Conway Twitty) I’m a fan of the humor. The episodes are often topical, self referential, and lampoon stereotypes and prejudices.

I’m amazed at how edgy the show can get; there is a lot of sexual innuendo, and there are few lines they won’t cross.

I’ve noticed that, among the jokes, are frequent digs at celebrities, yet they manage to attract a wide array of guest voices.

The other thing I have to say is that that Quagmire fellow is pretty impressive. Yes, he’s got sex issues, but aside from that, he’s a pilot, can sing and play guitar, and was once in a Korean soap opera. As I said, I’m routinely impressed.

Joe Swanson cracks me up, too. I enjoy the deadpan humor.

I see also that Stewie is getting his own spinoff for 2 seasons. They are going to follow his antics at a preschool (where he’s going to be using his ability to travel through time and space).

I’d welcome your thoughts, opinions, or even criticisms of the show.

Cheers!

You think that’s annoying? What about the time when…

It used to be a weekly watch for me but Peter eventually got tiresome and I’d only watch the Brian/Stewie adventures. I don’t think I have watched a new episode since we cut the cable cord ten years ago, although I think we have access through Hulu. Mean humor used to appeal to me more when I was younger. I’m more of a Bob’s Burgers guy now. Our 17 year-old cat who passed away six years ago was named after Stewie -has the show really been on that long?

Once in a while while channel surfing I have ended up watching Family Guy for a bit. Many times it’s hilarious, but too many times I end up being disappointed / disgusted with the misogyny in evidence. There are “jokes” where the “punch line” is a young woman left battered and half-naked in a trash heap. One episode peaked with salivating Peter jumping to molest his daughter, after being conditioned to react to a piece of music etc. etc. They are punching down, and it’s never funny. I’m left with the impression the writers are pieces of shit, deep inside.

I think Family Guy can be hit or miss, but when it’s good it’s one of the best.

My first exposure was the Star Wars parodies, which a friend urged me to watch. It had me from the first moments when Peter declared he was going to tell the story of Star Wars: “Let’s star with part four.”

Not knowing the characters, I really enjoyed it and began watching the show regularly. I especially like when Stewie and Brian have adventures in time travel, movie and TV parodies, Brian reverting to basic dog behaviors and Stewie exploring relationships and other adult topics while also being a literal baby.

The often surreal nature of the cutaways and general sense of humor appeals to me.

Well said. I think the show is funny at times, but the overall worldview is just ugly.
I also hate the thing they do where they spin out a joke for several minutes. That used to work, in an uncomfortable manner, but I eventually came to see it as the writers giving a middle finger to the audience.
