We should have a Doperlympics

I know there are a number of athletes on the boards I figured we could do something to keep people motivated, or get more people back into doing some sort of workout. My idea was something like this, we pick a number of different sports, I know there are swimmers, runners and bikers here, plus whatever other sports we can come up with. We give ourselves until June 30th of 2007, and between now and then we get our best times for whatever events we’d like to do.

I know for swimming there are plenty of meets, there are also lots of running and cycling races thru out the year. However, times really don’t mean much, it’s just a way to get people motivated and out there. So if it takes you six hours to run a marathon who cares just so long as you do it. Also that gives you a time to work at and get better if you want to try and do more then one. Plus since it’s hard to compare one race to another there’s no real way to see who wins.

My picks for events would be all the swimming events, 18 of them, plus one open water swim. Since I don’t know much about running someone else will have to come up with them, but I do know there are 100, 200, 400, 800 meters, plus 5k and 10k, and half and full marathons. I know even less about biking, but I do know there are century and half century rides. Plus we could combine all three and do triathlons. I’m not sure how many track and field events adults can do since I don’t follow them, but hey if you don’t mind hitting someone with a javelin then go for it.

This might also some of us to meet if we are thinking about doing the same race. There are plenty of marathons, and I know they have national swim meets. Maybe we could get some good rivalries going, then we could crown a champion.

So who’s up for getting off your butts and doing something? Maybe we could even get Cecil out of hiding to do something.

Hell, I’d be up for a weightlifting thing. . . you know, post your best bench, deadlift, etc.

It’s worth a shot[sub] a shotput, that is![/sub]

I’m in for weights, too. But two issues:

  1. It’s easy to cite for weights - someone at the gym can help take a picture. Lap times and such might prove somewhat more troublesome.

  2. What if SWIM is on substances usually banned in professional sports? Is this grounds for disqualification?

Umm, anyone want to try to be a springboard diver in 18months?

Not if the event is sanctioned then times can be posted. I can find times for swim meets for as far back as 2000, maybe even further if I looked.

Actually I wasn’t really wanting to go that far. It was more of a way to get people out and doing something. Plus a couple of people may all find themselves with similar times in something so they push that little bit harder to get faster.

I’m not even going to worry about stuff people may want to take, that’s way too much. There have been threads on the Masters swimming boards about steriods and such and there are no rules there. I don’t think we’d have a problem with it anyway.

Like I said it’s more for fun then anything.

USCDiver, I thought it would be funny to sign up for a diving event and make up my own dives, like the Long Walk off a Short Pier, the cannonball, or the Egg Roll, just to see what kind of scores I could get. I don’t have the balls to do it, but I think it would be funny.
