wearing pearls, in odd or even strands?

Thanks for the information. I would not have thought to look for such a thing. That would make disappointing Miss Manners’ Grandmother much more comfortable.

Apparently there are a lot of conflicting rules about pearls . . .

I don’t know if I could pull off three strands . . . I’m short and that many strands would make me look like a kid wearing her mom’s jewelry.

I have a single strand and a triple strand. Queen Elizabeth II has a lovely double strand, but her mother usually was pictured in a temple strand. I wonder if it’s anything like always have an odd number of flowers in a vase or an odd number of pillows on your couch.

I’ve definitely heard this rule, and I’m in my twenties, but my mother was mystified when I mentioned it. I think I saw it years ago in an article about an auction of Jackie O.'s stuff, talking about a triple strand of pearls. I’ve always thought it was silly.

Miss Manners said in Miss Manners’ guide to excruciatingly correct behavior
that she learned the rule “in Japan or some place.”

Maybe it’s like cut flowers in a vase and nicknacks on the mantel…odd numbers just look better?

Although…Michelle Obama’s 2 strand pearls look just fine to me.
