Are there any webmasters out there who can suggest an affordable web hosting service that isn’t run by a bunch of asshats? The one I’m using suddenly became asshat central last month without warning. If you’ve ever worked with a small hosting company then you know what I’m talking about.
I’m looking for a basic LAMP hosting service that also offers JSP and emerging frameworks like Ruby on Rails or Python.

I’m not sure how proper it is to recommend my friend, but I’ll do it anyway. I use Khomodo for all my hosting… it’s a very small host run by one of my good friends and his cousin. I like that I can just call him on his cell when something goes wrong or I need help and he’ll walk me through… no fuss or trouble tickets or “Press 1 for support, 2 for sales”, etc. They’re packages start at $5/month for LAMP.
They’re also big into Ruby on Rails, so I suspect they support it but have no direct experience with that or Python.
The only bad part… they don’t offer a control panel (Cpanel, for instance) for things like subdomains and email addresses and whatnot. They do have PHPmyadmin. Everything else typically done via Cpanel is now done via Terminal, which I’m less experienced with.
If you’re interested shoot me and email… they also don’t currently have an automated setup like the bigger guys do… it’s all done via phone.
I’ve been hosting with MyMarkdown (which despite the name, has given me excellent service) for a couple of years now, without hassle.
www.mymarkdown.com (and I’m not even linking you to my affiliate account, which would make me money :p) They do offer cPanel and a lot of built-in features and widgets.
