Just getting it started - don’t expect to see me in this most of the day.
Teen Titans #22: Dag, yo. Dr. Light is now one of my favorite villains. He’s creepy, he’s powerful, and (and this is the kicker) he’s right to be pissed off. A rare villain indeed that can deny the heroes the moral high ground.
Also the source of our quote of the week:
Light: Well? What re you waiting for, Nightwing. I know you’re dying to say it.
Nightwing: TITANS TOGETHER
The first time you read it, it’s an inspiring Titans moment. The second time, you ralize that Light plans on kicking all of their asses. And he has the mojo to back it up.
The sour spot was the new Hawk and Dove. Was this thier introduction? It kinda broke the momentum.
JLA #112: Busiek finally moves towards the conclusion of this thing. A solid issue, tempered by the fact that it took too damn long to get here.
I noticed a serious JLU bvibe coming off of both of this week’s selections. Everyone and their mothers show up to chip in. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, although I do enjoy lots of characterization in team books, and cameos can detract from that.
Both things I picked up this week were leftovers from last week…
Sonic the Hedgehog #146: Confusing story structure. Back-up stories better than the main story, which tends to be the case.
Flash #219: Great issue (that sold out! wow!). I was very wary of Johns writing Wonder Woman, since given his past attempts at it it’s clear that he either hates the character or simply knows nothing about her at all. This wasn’t bad, although I’m getting really sick of this “Wonder Woman is a bitch and everyone knows it” angle they’ve been taking with the character for the past couple years.
On the other hand, she did more in this one issue than she did in a year of Rucka writing her own book.
Ex Machina #9 – Great, as usual. Last time I was surprised how much Vaughan could make me care about Jackson’s family in a few pages – this one was even worse. The twist at the end was not unpredictable, but so what? This book is justifying all my extraordinarily high hopes.
Manhunter #8 – Most of this issue is outside the courtroom, and it’s great. Dramatic, intense, etc. Then the last few pages are back at trial and it loses all its energy, although there aren’t quite as many horrible, horrible errors as last month.
Simpsons Comics #104 – “Duffman! We invited you to school to talk on career day, not spray the children with beer!” 'Nuff said.

I’m sitll grooving on **Manhunter ** - I think it’s pretty darn nifty. **Ex Machina ** was particularly pleasing this month, because Mayor Hundred seems to espouse the exact same position on the gay marriage issue as I would in an ideal world. **Wonder Woman ** - I liked the issue, but I question Zoom’s success in speeding up the Cheetah. I mean, sure, she’s the Cheetah, giving her superspeed makes sense thematically, but I just think the justification was a little sparse.
My new purchases:
Cable #44 and #"-1": two discount bin blind buys, the first two issues of Cable written by one of my favorite writers, James Robinson (Starman, Golden Age, Firearm, Leave It To Chance). I thought they were very good, definitely the best take I’ve ever read on a a character that once represented every bad cliche about '90s comics. I liked Cable as a middle schooler, but his convoluted backstory made about as much sense as Hawkman, Power Girl, and the new Dr. Fate put together. Robinson explained everything we needed to know about Cable in one issue: Cyclops, Madelyne Pryor, Jean Grey, Mister Sinister, Apocalypse, even X-Man! I intend to pick up the rest of his run (#45-50) and Joe Casey’s run that followed (#51-70) next–I hear Casey’s run is even better than Robinson’s.
(Also, this is terrible, but during Cable’s conversation in #44 with his mother, Madelyne Pryor, in her Goblyn Queen costume, I kept thinking “What a MILF!”)
G.I. Joe #12, 13, 17, 20 from the '80s Marvel series (buy one back issue, get three free) - now I’m only five issues away from a complete 155-issue run of G.I. Joe! Larry Hama wrote some great Joe stories back in the day. Too bad all the Devil’s Due stuff left me cold.
Actually this is one reason I know it’s a great comic – I like Mitch even though I think his position on gay marriage is wrong and I’m creeped out by the scene at the end with his jetpack.

Given the rest of what happened that issue, and what we saw - you’re creeped out by the jetpack scene?
Young Avengers #2 Wow. The Kids are barely a group and there’s already a stampede at the door to join! I don’t think we needed to see Cassie Lang’s thng, though. That was kinda gratuitous.
I don’t know. I had no objections to the underwear thing. And was it a thong? We didn’t see the back.
I really like the artist on Young Avengers so far…
I hope I’m not (once again) behind on this one, but…
I agree with CandidGamera About the Cheetah thing. Thematically, sure… I just can’t see Zoom being able to actually -do- it.
JSA Rocked. I love this storyline so far, and can’t wait to see Der Gaton (er, that’s not his name… I can’t remember what it is! ) get his at the end of it all. The best moment in it was definately Dr. Midnite. Everyone else having major problems, and suddenly… All it takes is honest conversation. The medicine conversation really made me feel hopeful somehow. Like, “Hey, you know what? We haven’t done too bad!”
Also, any idea who broke Jesse out of the asylum? And what happened to the Thunderbolt?
Most recent Wonder Woman, I’ve stated on another thread; Liked it, but I’m getting a bit tired of ‘All male deities are automatically evil’.
Did the WW part of the WW/Flash x-over come out?
From my reading of the first part, I’d say Zoom could pull it off. A lot of powers in the DCU seem to be limited only by the user’s psyche. Magic and superspeed chief among them. As a psychologist and criminal profiler, this Zoom’s singularly eqipped to help her past such psychological blocks.
Only part of that book I fully enjoyed, really.
Yes, it did.
I dunno, though. Cheetah is granted her powers by a deity - isn’t she? That’s what they said… I mean, I guess the deity can just shrug, and say ‘Superspeed? Eh, why not.’
Jim Cheung. He’s great. He did Scion for CrossGen.

P.S. to ArrMatey! Per Degaton?
That’s the man. Wrote out his name, looked at it, and said, “That’s not him.”
What else… penultimate Space Ghost…Freedom Force #3… Birds of Prey #80; Exiles #61; Cable and Deadpool #13 - why isn’t this just Deadpool? He’s awesome.
Inviniclbe, Teen Titans, JLA - haven’t read yet. Ultimates 2 is in fonrt of me now, as I learn the sinister secret of Ultimate Thor… Ah! And Lullaby #1. Fables meets Final Fantasy. Sort of interesting. Actually, very promising.
Sigh. I posted my reviews of the three Ultimate titles I got this week and the hamsters ate it. Let me explain. No, that will take too long. Let me sum up:
Ultimate X-Men: Liked it, nice twist.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Feh. Filler. Could have sworn I’d bought this issue last time. took me to the middle of the book to realize it was new.
Ultimates 2: Very cool. Still not completely convinced that Thor is crazy. Not until they disassemble the hammer.
ToyFare: Funniest TTT evar
Ultimates 2 #4: I’m not convinced either. Remember issue 1, where Loki escapes.
I also noticed the TPB of Ultimate Nightmare is out. Too bad they spoiled the whole thing right on the cover!
The mini is a big reveal that Galactus is on his way. But they title the damn thing Ultimate Galactus: Ultimate Nightmare!!
I’m not convinced, but one thing that leads me to believe Thor IS indeed crazy is the fact he EXPECTS everyone to believe him, despite how looney his story sounds. A truly sane person would be saying “Look, I don’t expect you to believe this without proof…give me some time and we can find evidence.” Thor is saying “Wait! Can’t you see! It has to be Loki! He’s changed the past!”
That sounds like something a lunatic fanatic would say.
Spoil, please?
Thanks,
–Cliffy
