Here it is - haven’t gotten to mine yet.
Went back to Jersey this weekend and stopped at the shop which sells back issues for a buck each. Most of the stuff I really wanted had been picked clean, but I did pick up a Justice League Europe arc 15-21, the final Plastic Man, and that Simone/Liefield Teen Titans.
Teen Titans #27-28: Didn’t claw my eyes out, which is better than expected. #28 was actually much better writing wise.
Adventures of Superman #648: Very good.
Birds of Prey #92: Wait, the Ventriquist is a “real” character? I taught they just made him up for the new animated show. Let’s see where this goes.
JLA: Classified #18: Wonder Woman baked? Very good.
Supergirl + Legion #16: 1001 Years Later, heh. Again, let’s see where this is going.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #16: OK1YL! Interesting. Did Waid just retcon his series away? Probably not. Enjoyed how SG is mythic in the 31st century.
Batman #651: Ahh. This is good Batman. Not a dick. Interesting new take on Ivy. But what’s up with the cover? I get what’s being done, but come on, it’s a forearm!
Curses, I doubled the ‘m’. Wish I could fix that…
Legion was excellent; Batman was good. Manhunter was solid - an interesting twist there. Hawkgirl - I don’t know if I’ll stick with it, but I want to know what happened to Carter. Catwoman - Not bad, some interesting moments with Slam and with Bruce.
JSA Classified - Focus on Vandal Savage.
Robin - best of the bunch of OYL titles, I think. I really like the building mystery, and we get a hint of where the Batboys have been for the last year.
Fixed it.
A thousands thanks!
I have no idea when the Ventriloquist and Scarface first appeared in the comics. I do know they were around as early as Knightfalll.
Their first animated appearance was not the current series, but Bruce Timm’s art deco masterpiece.
I hate the Ventriloquist SO MUCH. Die, Dummy, die.
Re: Catwoman: So, are we supposed to think Bruce is Selina’s baby’s father? She did name her Helena, and he’s offering scholarships and teddy bears. Which, awwww.
It is nice to see the Bat family being much more functional.
I haven’t gotten to most of my books yet.
What does the Dummy have to do with this? I thought he disappeared after Crisis.
Remember folks-
Scarface and the Ventriloquist= Wimp with stereotypical multiple personality disorder which manifests through a stereotypical gangster dummy with a speech impediment.
The Dummy= An extremely short man with an odd condition which makes him resemble a ventriloquist’s dummy. He lead several gangs, while posing as a dummy used by the ‘real boss’. He killed a sidekick, of the son of somebody’s sidekick (hot shot? sure shot? Wing Lee?) of a hero whose name escapes me.
I didn’t mean THE Dummy, I meant THAT dummy. The one mentioned in a few posts above, relating to Birds of Prey #92. Perhaps I shouldn’t have capitalized it.
What in Sam Hill are you talking about? Nobody said anything about the One. What possible relevance could an obscure eighties miniseries have to any of the comics mentioned in this thread?
The Ventriloquist is one of my favourite Batman villains. I’m glad to see him back. Also glad to see Ivy back. DCUguide puts Ventriloquist’s first appearance in Detective 583 (Feb 1988), so he predated TAS by a good 6 years, and The Batman by almost 20. (He wouldn’t be the only character from TAS to flip to the comics if he had started there, though - Harley Quinn and the Condiment King have both shown up in the comics universe.) All of the villains in The Batman have equivilants in the comics, so far as I know. Although they don’t always resemble them much (Ragdoll, Mindbender, and Cluemaster are the biggest changes in characters I’ve seen.).
Anyway…this week’s books…
Hawkgirl 50 - Not bad. Like the story, and I’ve always been fond of Kendra. I’m officially not a fan of Chaykin’s art here. The only other Chaykin-drawn book I read was his Blackhawk (which I liked)…if I were to pick up others, would I find it more Blackhawk or Hawkgirl in appearance?
Batman 651 - Good issue. Quick, handy dealing with Ivy. Robin needs to lay off the sugar, I think. <_< One thing, though…isn’t Magpie already dead?
Ultimate Fantastic Four 28 - I’m liking the arc…not entirely sure how I feel about the Skrull. I like the version from The Ultimates…this version are OK, and all, but I would have liked it better if they were all like the Chitauri, I think. Art still sucks, though. And, is it me, or does Thor look completely different than he did last issue?
Well, they did have a crisis in their letter column a few months back.
I liked how some of the kids have reacted to their newly legitimate law enforcement powers: by acting really smug and obnoxious about it! But do ALL of the Legionnaires have equal authority? That might cause some problems, since anyone can join and there’s apparently 170,000 of them.
JSA Classified 10 - I do hope Vandal ends up working out how to stick around. Be a shame to lose him. This is also the first time I’ve read a story with him where he actually looked like a caveman. Which was more impressive before I noticed just about everyone did. I love the diagnostic machine’s message including ‘Minor arthritis in left knee.’
Catwoman 53 - I’m new to Catwoman…how old is Holly…she’s clearly older than any of the Robins were when they started, but just out of curiosity’s sake. Love Selina’s new identity.
I enjoyed his work in City of Tomorrow.
ah, I’m not crazy then. Yeah, I thought she was dead too.
It’s definitely not bad.
Also got Red Sonja, The Intimidators, couple of back issues starring the Phantom Stranger… Vol 1 of the Essential Deluxe Handbook of the Marvel Universe… She-Hulk, Exiles, New Avengers, X-Factor…
GL #8: Didn’t need to see that. Got my fill of blocks being knocked off in Inf Cri #4. Good issue though.
She-Hulk #6: Glad this isn’t the permanant artist and sad to hear that Bobillo is gone for good. He brought a lot to the book. How awesome were Awesome Andy’s blackboards (Ho hum…)?
Supermarket 2 - Oh, yes. Oh, yes, indeed. I enjoyed the first issue, but wasn’t sure if I’d like where it was going. Silly me, I shouldn’t have worried. This…was something. Worth the price for the food court alone.
Surely you’ve got no room to complain about relevance, after referencing a vanishingly little-known 1950’s crime comic like Sam Hill, Private Eye?
Supreme Power: Hyperion 5 and Squadron Supreme 1 - Hyperion’s not as unimpressive as the Doc Spectrum mini was, but it’s one of the lesser SP books, for sure. Still…a fairly solid wrapup. Squadron Supreme was pretty good, though…toned down from the Max series, as was to be expected, but they seem to have kept the spirit up, well enough. I’m sad that Kingsley had to dress. Clothing doesn’t suit her.
