Hey, this might be the first time I start this thread.
Final Crisis #1: Disappointing. Really huge continuity problems with stuff that was supposed to be a direct lead-in to Final Crisis. And not very interesting.

Really? What continuity problems? Just the fact that New Gods are around again? They’re obviously changed versions of those characters, I’m sure there’s a real explanation for what their exact nature is.
I know people are complaining about the fact that the heroes reaction to Orion doesn’t match Countdown or Death of the New Gods and seems to treat the New Gods as people that most of the superheroes hadn’t dealt with before. That’s likely the continuity problems he’s referring to.
Yeah. Superman says incidents of contacts with the new gods were on the rise recently, as if he didn’t just witness the destruction of the entire 4th world. Unless that’s what he meant by “contact”, which is an odd way of putting it. I wonder if they hadn’t originally planned for Superman to be a witness to The Source rebooting the 4th world.
Thanks for kicking it off.
Other than Superman’s comments, I didn’t see any other continuity problems with New Gods/Final Crisis.
I was very pleased with this week’s batch of comics - boy, the Teen Titans sure are running out of members quick.
And that reads less like a continuity error than a retcon, given a) Fifth World Metron is the one playing Prometheus with Anthro in the first few pages, b) the Dark Side Club stuff is portraying the New Gods in the forms they were taking back in Seven Soldiers (mostly…the Furies aren’t whores this time around) - 1-3 years before the Fourth World gods were killed and c) the Source, the God of Gods, obviously has vast temporal powers, given what Metron (one of His creations) can do. Which all leads to the idea that the Fourth World has been removed from human history, mostly replaced with the generally more distant Fifth World.
Curses, missed Giant-size Astonishing X.
Young Avengers - didn’t like the art on this one, and the story was rather ordinary, but at least they’re still being written as teens.
Action Comics - decent use of Jimmy, Batman… but bring on Braniac, already.
Blue Beetle - felt like Jaime was dumbed down a bit so the girlfriend could shine, but it was an okay filler issue.
LSH - happy that there is at last some continuity from this reboot’s continuity with the Lyle’s parents stuff. although Shooter is slowly changing the tone to be more in line with the classic LSH. (had a momentary qualm, since Colossal Boy on the cover is in a rather dreadful Liefeldesque pose)
Green Lantern - nice to see all the oldtimey GLs, but this issue really doesn’t add much new aside from Tomar’s comments about Abin Sur’s obsessions.
Final Crisis - yeah, the continuity callback to Countdown and Death of the New Gods was kind of questionable. and it’s really a bit disjointed so far (what Morrison story isn’t at the start, though?). But. it held my interest, which is something the latter two series failed completely at (mostly, those held my annoyance).
All-Star Superman - remarkable how exactly what you’d expect to happen in the opening, happens, yet it loses none of the fun. I’d also not object to Nasthalthia showing up in regular continuity.
And, stuff I’ve read other than FC:
Batman - The Alfred Beagle reference comes home, convincing me Jezebel is involved with the Black Glove. Seriously, it’s too convenient that Bruce mentions Alfred’s stage career to Jez in 'Tec, and it comes back in the obviously falsified attempt to slander the Waynes and Alfred here.
Teen Titans - FEVER!!! It’s Fever! Oh frabjous day! (Even if she is brainwashed by Granny…) ahem Aside from one of my favourite obscure characters (from my favourite Doom Patrol run) appearing… When I saw the Dark Side Club banner on the cover, I should have seen where it was going, so I’m a bit embarrassed I didn’t. (I do hope the Dark Side Club stuff takes a bit of a swerve either in FC or in one of the tie-in books…it seems pretty basic as is.) Now, Stompa is appearing…so is this taking place before Birds of Prey, or did she heal a lot faster than expected, I wonder. Also, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… CLOCK KING? WTF?
You know something just occurred to me…
With Fever showing up, and the reveal of Clock King’s power…I’m suddenly wondering if he might be Fast Forward. Granted the duration is slightly different, but his powers DID get screwed with.
**Iron Fist ** was ok. Not great, but any Fraction is good Fraction.
Giant-Sized Astonishing X-Men - Whedon and Casaday finally wrap up the story. Not a bad ending at all. Whedon writes Spidey well. I was afraid he was going to pull off one of his standard endings, but he ran a nice twist that made me decide not to kill him after all. Armor is turning out to be my new favorite new X-man. She has a realistic attitude towards dealing with Wolverine.
All Star Superman was great. Lois’ reaction at the end “Clark is…Clark is…” suggests she really does believe he’s Superman and can’t imagine he’s really dying.(for that matter, neither can I, since we’ve already seen his DC 1,000,000 form in this series) I’m really looking forward to the next issue.
Action was also pretty good, although I have mixed feelings about Hiro’s status. I did like Jim’s line “I’m twenty two you jerk!”
Final Crisis…We’ll see. I wasn’t pleased with that dialogue about the New Gods either, so we’ll just have to see how it turns out. I’m surprised at the lack of response so far to J’onn J’onzz apparent death but I’m far from convinced that’s permanent anyway, so maybe it’s just a case of everybody thinking “This won’t last.”
Fables. War! Magic + technology! A good start to the storyline.
Actually, my thought was “Eh, it’s Morrison. And a first issue of his run. What I think I just saw will never turn out to be what acutally happened.”
BTW, who was the guy waking up seeing the news report? He’s probably significant.
Wasn’t that Green Lantern John Stewart? That’s why the look of shock on his face at looking at his hands - finding them ringless.
At least, that’s how it looked to me.
Actually, I figured him for the human form of the Black Racer, who had shown up hovering in the air for Orion’s death.
Wow…here I thought the guy’s ID was pretty obvious. Seems pretty blatant to me it’s Nix Uotan. 2 pages after he’s sentenced to being mortal, same design - specifically, the hair. Can’t imagine him being anyone else…
Unless you guys are joking, in which case…ya wooshed me.
As to the death…I say kill him. I like the guy, buy I like the idea of the heads of the people who think he’s the most important character in the DCU exploding, more. I’m mean that way.
OK, other books… Since I accidentally closed the thread before sending my last attempt at a post.
Power Pack - I’m liking this take on their origin better than the original, personally. If only for the Snark Babies. That Julie got to name the Snarks, and Katie coined the name ‘Whitey’ for Aelfyre, rather than both coming from Whitey helps, though. Surprised Alex didn’t take offence at the Carroll quote Julie used to describe him…heh.
Perhapanauts - I missed the first issue the first time around and got them both at the same time. Mmm, Perhapanauts. I’ve missed it. A good showing. I’m particularly fond of Choopie breaking in on Molly’s opening narration in issue 1 and the Choopie Goes to Church backup in it. Nothing wrong with Issue 2, of course, but it doesn’t have as many standout moments. Except ‘Ether Bunny’…most awesome superhero name ever.
Legion - OK, the introduction of the new costumes is kind of interesting. Although the joke with Cham and Star Boy was sightly obvious, it was still amusing. And the Rimbor team’s use of their powers was pretty good - Star Boy’s ‘hammers’, particularly were beautiful - obvious in hindsight, but very creative. And although I wish they’d remember Cham’s antennae are only supposed to come out when he’s scanning something, I’m glad they remembered that’s what they’re for. (Also…it occurs to me…could Brainie not use Cham for his analysis? Hmm…)
Tengu: Upon reread… :smack: . How did I not realize that?
Likewise Tengu, I wasn’t whooshing. I missed that. :smack: :smack:
The hair! D’oh!
