Here 'tis. Haven’t gotten to mine yet…
Bah. Spoil me rotten! 52 has got me hungry week to week. They really hit a homerun with this thing. What will Skeets do next!
52 reminded me, once again, that Lex Luthor really is a vile man.
Justice League of America #2: This has the exact same strengths and weaknesses as evidenced in Identity Crisis. Excellent building to the world around the characters, strong characterization (if not 100% in line with how the characters are protrayed elsewhere). Weak actual plot. It’s flawed, but interesting enough to keep around.
Blue Beetle #7: For a shocking secret, that wasn’t very shocking. Still fun “between the pages” stuff from Infinite Crisis. “Do me a favor, Jaime. Don’t tell Green Arrow you said that.”
The Trials of Shazam #2: Wow. I had no idea that they intended to shake up the Marvels this much! But… It’s working for me so far. The gorgeous art doesn’t hurt.
Secret Six #4: So deliciously, deliciously wrong. And yeah, I totally knew Kay would do that.
Action Comics #843: A fun conclsuion to a fun story. The Auctioneer’s a great addition to the villainous pantheon, and the cover is just great in its satire.
Batman #657: Wow. I thought they’d be taking a much grayer route with Damian. That kid’s messed.
**Teen Titans #39: ** I continue to enjoy the new former Titans. Of course, Miss Martian loses a lot of her oomph given the current MM miniseries, but she still works.
52 Week 21: Lex is very very bad. Ralph is playing Orpheus. Red Tornado has a new design that makes Ma Hunkel look like Batman.
I read my Marvel Stuff…
Civil War : Frontline - Could this be the end of Robbie Baldwin? I hope not.
X-Factor - The plot thickens with some flashbacks to Jamie’s childhood, and how he’s different from other mutants.
She-Hulk - Sheer awesomeness. Starfox is tried on Titan to exonerate him, and we learn that causing She-Hulk to fall in love with John Jameson may be the least of his crimes, if what his brother says is true… also, a hilarious cameo by Pip the Troll as She-Hulk discovers the disadvantages of a toga.
Ultimates 2 - Wall to wall action. Ho ho ho. Hulk smash puny Abomination.
Amazing Spider-Man - Pete asks to see Reed and Tony’s extradimensional prison. Tony’s a dick. Reed’s characterization is partially redeemed. And, most importantly,
Spider-Man switches sides.
Straczynski should be writing Civil War, not Millar.
Breaking News:
52 editor Steve Wacker has defected to Marvel.
Will this halt the line?
Hmmm. DC has existed since before WW2, has a massively successful franchise.
Ummm…no. :dubious:
Ultimates 2 #12 ROCKED! I loved the Hulk’s lines when he was beating the shit out of the Abomination. “Can you tell Hulk the formula for Coca-Cola?”
And then there was Captain Arabia or whatever he called himself: “Don’t you even want to know why we did what we did?”
Nope.
52 - The gap Titans are a pretty lousy team. Power Boy (maybe now that he’s clearly Apokoliptikan, people will stop saying he’s the third Kryptonian or the new Mon-El) and Barda, particularly bug me. I like Zatara, even if he has…bad timing for hitting on Raven. I was shocked when Luthor did what he did - I didn’t think even he’d do that (especially since it risks giving the game away). Skyman does kind of have a point when he’s talking to Raven, but, on the other hand, he’s exagerating how removed from the ‘real’ Titans Raven and BB are.
Blue Beetle - The real issue of this book is the dialogue - between Batman and Jaime, between Dinah and Ollie, between Jaime’s family and friends (‘No es El Diablo’ ‘No suspueto, no. But he’s not bad for a white guy.’)
Teen Titans - That last page is fun. Expecting it, I was not. Like it, I do.
Legion of Super-Heroes - I wonder what the electromagnetic field Kara’s carrying is - is it just because she’s Kryptonian, or a result of her time travel.
Civil War : YA/Runaways - Wow, what a beatdown.
Cable/Deadpool - Wade gets serious for a moment.
Hawkgirl - It’s only on my list at this point because I want to see Hawkman back.
Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters - I have issues witht he art - it’s under-inked. I do like the Yet-Another-Patriotic-Themed Government Superteam…
Blue Beetle - Love the dialogue, hate the technological scarab. It should be magic, dammit!
JSA Classified - Exiles scribe Tony Bedard makes a leap to DC for this, which actually isn’t too shabby.
JLA #2 - Well, well, well. I didn’t expect to see him again anytime soon. Booster’s fate gets a little more sealed by dialogue here.
Legion - A Karate Kid focus. Excellent. Dominator hijinks. Also excellent.
Teen Titans - yes, the last page reveal is most intriguing. I look forward to seeing more.
Batman - Boy, that kid’s a brat. His parents should be shot.
Action - Plenty of intriguing story ideas will spring from this. Nice to see Live Wire slumming it on the hero side just a little.
Supergirl - Probably the best issue of the title so far.
Secret Six - “Now shut up and eat your Grundy.”
Trials of Shazam - Poor Mary. At least she’s alive, though. I wondered how they’d handle the various gods that grant the power of Shazam, but that was neatly explained. Still, I think it takes away a little…
52 - Other blog types have rightly pointed out that the Space Arc in 52 is the Odyssey; I wonder if our other threads are intended to parallel Greek myth so directly. Icarus and Daedalus for John Henry Irons and Natasha, perhaps? Orpheus’s journey to the underworld, for Ralph’s quest?
I meant 52, the hereto successful weekly comic. Can it survive a sudden editoral change?
Considering that it’s probably already drtawn & waiting in a file cabinet to be printed…yes.
Check out Teen Titans GO! An anti-war screed! In a kiddie comic!
Best line in the issue, although Ragdoll got a couple good ones, too.
‘Maybe it’s the potentially fatal blood loss talking…’ I need to find an opportunity to start a comment with that. And ‘Oh, do hush, and bring me my beloved stuffed Parademon, won’t you?’ That line is so…cute! And the stuffed Parademon looks to be a dollie, not the stuffed corpse of the Parademon, which would still be cute…in a twisted, sick way. <_<
Ultimate Spider-Man - Pretty good story. Interesting revelations. Bit of a rip off that only half the double size issue was actually story, but the other material was pretty interesting, too.
Have to agree there. Hell, I’d go so far as to say that anyone but Millar should be writing this.
It was good to see Peter expressing some of the doubts he should’ve had when this whole thing started.
Also on the Civil War front, the Captain America comic finally joins the plot. No great revelations here, but Cap expounds a bit on why he is against the act, and with Brubaker writing instead of Millar, Cap is more likable and reasonable and less like his Ultimates counterpart.
And lets not forget that Ultimate Spider Man #100 was released in all it’s Bendis Clone saga glory. I guess Bendis thought he could make the clone saga a good idea. Boy howdy was he wrong. I’ll spoiler box this, but I don’t know why. Doesn’t make a whole lotta sense. Turns out Peters dad never got on the doomed plane. He was then recruited by Gyrich to work for him against Nick Fury by revamping the Venom costume. Peter gets even more Emo. Aunt May yells at everyone. Cold pizza is served. Gwen is revealed to be Carnage. Clone Peter that kidnapped MJ winds up fighting a six armed spider clone in a black costume with a white diamond on it’s head (Scriers?) while MJ looks on in horror. Meanwhile Nick Fury’s SHIELD lands on Peter’s block to arrest everyone in sight. Then that Kaitlyn chick started making out with the Ferris Wheel. It’s like Bendis took everything confusing out of the original clone saga and compressed it into one issue.
I like the Ultimates Cap a hell of a lot more than the one Brubaker writes.
The Trials of Shazam #2: Freddy Freeman just can’t seem to catch a break. As Captain Marvel Junior, he could never say his own name because it incorporated his personal “magic words.” Now those words no longer have any effect, but it seems that he can summon the magic by using the word “Shazam” as the rest of the Marvel Family once did. But if Freddy succeeds in his quest to save their magical lineage, Billy tells him that he “will be called… Shazam.” Which would put him right back at Square One, name-wise.
No way. Millar’s Cap is a one dimensional thug. Sure he occasionally waxes nostalgic over how simple life used to be, but then he punches something and feels better. I pray for the day that someone writes an issue where Ultimates Cap gets his tochis kicked by Batroc the Leaper.
That’s your opinion, but I don’t share it. Millar’s Cap is more the way an ACTUAL soldier in the 40s would have been, unlike the sensitive 90s-2000s guy in the regular Marvel universe. He certainly has a better grasp on reality than the regular Cap.
Anyone want to spoil 52 for me? I’m not making it to the store for awhile.
The speedster from Luthor’s team - called Infinity Inc, as of this issue - got into a shouting match with him a while ago. Natasha convinced him to let her come back in. The kid is extremely happy, since she loves the Flashes, Kid Flashes, Impulse, presumably Max, too (she’s from Manchester, like Max).
The new Infinitors’ first mission was against a new Blockbuster (also a subject of Luthor’s Everyman project)…after they take down BB (thanks to Luthor cranking his powers down), they’re celebrating when Luthor repowers BB, who escapes. The speedster goes after him, and Luthor turns her powers off, so that Blockbuster can beat her to death. The Titans (who were at the fight) attend her funeral, where Hot Spot, Power Boy, and Little Barda quit, because they don’t think this itteration of the Titans is working out. Zatara hits on Raven at the funeral, and Natasha has a bit of a blow up at Steel - although the Titans know something’s up and offer to help him. We’re not shown if he accepts.
Meanwhile, Ralph and the Helm of Nabu are weaselling their way into Hell. Or a Hell, at least.
And, finally, Down Under, a mechanic is building Red Tornado a new body. It’s…not up to Morrow’s standards.
