Sorry Norinew but i am only a guest member until i get paid not this Friday but the next so maybe u can give your e-mail or plz e-mail me at shawn_golden2003@yahoo.com.
That explanation’s good enough for me. Carry on.
I’m coming up on two years post-surgery and still am thrilled about my decision.I had a lap RnY and most chicken is my enemy, though beef and shrimp are now my best friends, which is a little tough on a bread and water budget like mine! I avoid anything over ten grams of sugar, and haven’t had more than a mouthful of rice, and I treat pasta with the respect it deserves, because more than a little is painful. I’ve only dumped few times, mostly from bacon, and I rarely throw up anymore. I’ve strayed to the danger zone a few too many times with cookies and the like while baking and preparing food for these concert receptions I cater, but I am thrilled that I now have power over my eating and can walk away from something lucious, so even if I eat something I shouldn’t, I only eat a little…one bite of cheesecake, not the whole thing! I do need to explore the world of Bean-o, though!
Good luck with your surgery, norinew!
kittenblue, wow, I’ve never heard of dumping from bacon! Just goes to show how entirely individual we all are!
As far as the gas, some post-op buddies of mine have had luck with taking ginger capsules or drinking ginger tea or peppermint tea. You might try that.
Thanks for the well wishes!
In case any of you were wondering, my surgery was postponed. It was supposed to be May 24th, but my surgeon had to go out of town today, and didn’t want to go out of town with a post-op still in the hospital. My new date is June 2nd. One week from today.
I was starting to wonder!
I’m going to have my daughter, EtherealFreakOfPinkness post here next Friday just to let anyone who’s wondering know that I’m out of surgery, and comfortably drugged in a room!
I found out my surgeon uses Dilaudid every two hours for post-op pain. I knew there was a reason I liked that guy!
b]EtherealFreakOfPinkness[/b EFOP : They will want norinew to take walks . Tell norinew to walk a LOT . I know it HURTS but tell norinew it will make the release from the hospital much sooner . The sooner
(s)he gets out the better. AND God be with you both.
Omegaman, thanks for the words of support! I’ve had several major abdominal surgeries (just none involving my intestines), and know the importance of walking afterwards. I know it helps aid healing, and helps prevent those nasty, potentially fatal blood clots! And yes, it does hurt like hell, but if you time it just right with the pain meds, you can minimize that.
Tomorrow morning I leave for Baltimore. Friday is the big day!
Wish me luck!
LUUUUUUUUCK!!! Although you won’t need it; your surgeon sounds pretty good.
I’m about 6 months post RnY surgery and I can say, even after spending last night on the bathroom floor in the throes of dumping (1/2 & 1/2 is NOT milk even if the carton LOOKS like milk. If you enjoy it too much, it is NOT milk…) Anyway, those moments are fortunately very rare.

It’s my understanding that for the first two weeks or so, I’ll probably wish I was dead, and regret ever having done such a stupid thing. After that, it gets better rapidly. By two to three months out, I should pretty much know what my new tummy can and cannot tolerate, and be back to work and full functioning.

That was precisely my thoughts after surgery. I spent quite a bit of time throwing up during the learning process. Oddly, chicken is my friend, but tuna is my best friend. I also melt cheese & pour off the excess fat before eating, eat a lot of cottage cheese, cook vegetables far more thoroughly than I used to like, and avoid anything white that doesn’t come out of a cow, goat or sheep. Do that, and I’m 1,000% fine.
One suggestion-- sugar-free popsicles are da bomb after surgery. It’s a great way to keep yourself rehydrated, and the coolness just feels really, really good.
Which hospital, dork? I’ll bring -uh, not snacks.
Yeah, snacks would be a bad idea! I’ll be in Franklin Square.
mojave66, yeah, I heard that about the sugar free popsicles! Thanks for the good thoughts!
I’ll be thinking about you. I have an insanely busy weekend (daughter graduating is #1), but if you need anything, please let me know. Franklin Square isn’t too far from me. I’ll be glad to bring you trashy magazines and Harlequin romances.
Norinew, good luck. Be sure to make a pass on the anesthesiologist when he starts to put you under…
Please come back a loser!
BiblioCat, I don’t do Harlequin romances, but if you get a chance to bring by some trashy magazines, feel free!
VunderBob, if I don’t come back a loser, I’m gonna be pissed!
Good Luck, norinew! My brother (**verbenabeast ** on this board) just had the surgery 11 days ago and he’d lost 46 pounds as of his first follow-up appointment. Of course, he was about double your size so your mileage may vary… a bit. I’ve been trying to get approval for my WLS since February so I’ll be praying extra hard that all goes well with you. Be sure to update as soon as you can!
Good luck on your surgery tomorrow! I had the RNY almost 3 years ago (7/3/03) and it was the best decision I ever made. My gastric reflux is gone, my back pain is 90% better and my ulcerative colitis was better than ever (before I gave birth anyway).
The best part of it all is that we tried to get pregnant for almost a year when I was overweight, but last year, I became pregnant almost as soon as we started trying! The only problem I had with the pregnancy (besides my colitis flaring up after delivering) is that my baby was smaller than normal due to the nutritional issues. My perception of how much I eat has completely changed. I thought I was eating more than I should, but when I consulted with a nutritionist during 3rd trimester, she said I wasn’t eating nearly enough.
I hope you have a great surgery and recovery, but mark my words, you will never want to eat sugar-free Jello ever again after the first month!
One of the blessings of being a vegetarian: I don’t eat Jello, so hospitalization isn’t nearly as gross as it could be. Muahahaha!
Btw, with the surgery Norinew is having, she is ok to eat regular (not sugar-free) Jello if she doesn’t like the sugar-free kind.
Good luck Norine!!! does that goofy Arsenio thing with her arm
