Weight variation in Lockdown – are you putting it on or taking it off?

Just curious, really. I’ve been losing weight at the rate of about 2kg/4 lbs a month.

Admittedly my circumstances are unusual; in the aftermath of surgery last December, I was unable to exercise over Xmas and New Year (ouch!) and by the time I was given the OK to exercise again (mid Jan) I was frankly too depressed to weigh myself. My estimate was 180 lbs/81.6 kg, and since then I have been making a real effort to exercise diligently and eat properly. Now I’m 164 lbs/74.4 kg. (Full disclosure: we’re retired, so work isn’t a distraction.)

Thing is, bizarrely, I don’t think there has ever been a better time to lose weight, if you put your mind to it. We food shop once a week – I don’t think there has been a week since lockdown started when we’ve been to a grocery store twice. No nipping out to the store for treats. No snacks in cafes on trips out. No meals out. No pubs. No takeaways. The weather has been good, and there’s nothing much to do apart from exercise (we’re allowed out on bikes and for walks). Mrs T is likewise losing weight. And it’s not just us – over about the same period, my friend D has lost 21 lbs – and there wasn’t* that* much of her in the first place.

Are we that unusual? If it’s not too personal a thing to ask, how’s your weight these days? And how tight is the lockdown where you are – is that a factor?

PS: Note to mods - I opted for MPSIMS rather than QZ as it’s a bit lightweight for the latter (no pun intended) and not directly about COVID.

I’ve lost five pounds since March. Intentionally, slowly. No big deal.
Edit to add: same with Mrs. C. About 5 lbs, intentionally and gradually.

Idaho, lockdown ended three weeks ago. Mrs. C and I are retired, quietly stay at home types anyway, so for us the Plague has been minimally disruptive.

I’m losing weight slightly but I was a pretty regular gym goer and I have a feeling it’s muscle mass I’m shedding. I was actually on a bit of a cut and trying to get my body fat down from around 15% to closer to 12% and I was getting there nice and slowly. My weight has continued to drop steadily as if the cut is ongoing but I have a feeling this weight loss is not due to fat loss as my diet has gone out the window and although I am still trying to do some bits of my workout at home, doing a few pull ups and press ups cannot replace the intensity of the gym.

Eventually the gyms will reopen and I’ll really see how much strength I’ve lost. I suspect quite a few people will be working to get back onto their previous levels. All part of the fun…

My sife and I started intermittent fasting on Feb.1. Since then I have lost two pounds and she has lost 6. We are not doing it to lose weight and it has nothing to do with the virus. We don’t eat between 3 PM and 7 AM. It is surprisingly easy to maintain.

I’ve lost 13# since March 8. We’re not locked down, but I’m not working 60+ hours a week, nor am I eating much packaged food. Fasting blood glucose is also down. I’m also doing a reasonable amount of anaerobic exercise (yard work). Yes, this is deliberate.

Oddly, lost about 12#. I have no idea how. I do know I have been doing fruit for snacks after getting disgusted with myself for eating a whole bag of white cheddar popcorn in one sitting while reading

The mirror test tells me I’ve probably lost some. I’ve been running a little more, so it makes sense.

Down 16 lbs since lockdown. Mostly don’t snack. I grocery once a week (during the senior hours at Kroger) and allow myself one candy bar each trip. However, a this rate I should be where I am supposed to be by Thanksgiving. Or Christmas. Maybe New Years. of 2021. Sigh.

I don’t weigh myself but the ‘I’m sure my pants never used to be this tight’ test indicates I’ve probably put on weight. I rarely bought food out anyway, and, with one trip out a week, found I was buying less fresh vegetables, so all my food has gone more carb-heavy.

Added to that I’m living in a small, cluttered flat with only enough shared outdoor space to park the car and hang the washing out, I’m not going to my job, which is usually fairly active, and I’ve had a lot of stuff to do on the computer. Plus I’m a Millennial, so I’ve been doing some baking, but I live by myself, so I also have to eat it. Walking, my preferred form of exercise was also a bit tricky, as while I live in a small town, there’s actually very few places good for walking that don’t involve walking down unsafe roads to get there, and they’ve all been heaving with dog walkers, many of whom have apparently decided that they no longer need to pick up after their dogs. With the ban on driving for exercise, that meant that I really didn’t wind up going out as much as I’d have liked to like, though the ban’s now been lifted.

It’s actually a little surprising I’ve not put on more weight.

Lost some weight, probably because we’re down to two meals a day, and eating a lot of homemade soups.

I quit smoking in November and have gained about 18 pounds. I’m just slightly less active since.SAH, but in the last month have been eating less junk, so I haven’t lost any of the stop smoking weight. I lose weight very slowly, and would consider a pound a week a rapid loss.

I’ve put on about 10 pounds. :very sad face:

When this all started, I was ordering food deliveries and in order to make the minimum, I would order chocolate and then eat it all in no time at all. I’m not doing that anymore, so I’m back down a couple pounds, but that still leaves me with 8 pounds to lose to get back to where I was.

Lost weight. Not sure how much because I rarely weighed myself before but my jeans were literally falling off my ass the other day and I had to regularly put my finger in the loop to keep them up. And my belt cinches an extra hole.

Guessing it’s less fast food and smaller, healthier meals since we’re cooking at home.

I am continuing the weight loss that began over a year ago. Oddly enough, it’s easier in confinement. We used to go out for breakfast every weekend, plus out for dinner several times a week. Now, apart from occasional take-out, I’m cooking for us, and I tend to stick with healthy fare. Plus I don’t buy snacky stuff or desserts.

I’m down over 65# from my max, and it’s about time to buy yet smaller jeans. Oddly enough, I haven’t been tempted by boredom eating, which used to do me in. I seem to have a completely different food attitude these days.

I’m getting much less exercise than usual, and I’m probably eating worse. But somehow, I seem to be losing girth (that is, my pants are getting loose). Weight, I don’t track often enough to say.

I’ve lost at least 12 pounds since the lockdown. I haven’t weighed myself since, but I visited my primary care physician exactly one month apart (when the lockdown started, to address anxiety issues, and a follow-up a month later), and I had lost 12 pounds in the interim. That was about two weeks ago, so I may have lost a bit more, but my appetite has been coming back to me the last few days. I mean, I’ve been eating, but pretty much only dinner. Like my circadian rhythms and everything are all out of whack, and my appetite doesn’t really appear until about 6 p.m. or so. I’ve been trying to force a yogurt or Fiber One down my gullet in the morning, but, like this morning, I actually was hungry and had some leftover grilled chicken that I cooked up last night.

Now, I do need to shed a few pounds, so I guess that’s good, but it is disruptive to energy levels throughout the day when I don’t eat regularly. Skipping breakfast is not unusual for me, but I typically have an appetite in the morning; Skipping lunch is definitely odd for me. Anyhow, it all seems to be slowly returning to normal. It’s just the regular routine has been so broken up with this Covid stuff, and my body or psyche or both have been kind of shaken off-kilter.

ETA: OK, I weighed myself, and it’s held steady from my last doctor’s visit, so that’s good. I mean, I want to lose some weight, but not be in free-fall. Good to know that I’ve been getting enough calories and that my impressions of my appetite coming back have been accurate.

I weigh myself every morning, and have been remarkably stable at between 182 and 189 for years. During the first few weeks I went up about 10, but it’s come back off. However, I have become much less fit. More weight concentrated in my middle, and less muscle.

I guess going from slinging plywood sheets around all day to sitting on my ass will do that.

I haven’t been on a scale for a long time but it feels like I’m holding steady. Not dieting but eating very little take out. Unfortunately my back is keeping me from being very active.

I’m holding steady. I started back on Weight Watchers in October after being away from it from a long time because I’d started gaining weight again and my doctor was giving me the hairy eyeball about it. Between not reliably being able to get the things I want at the grocery AND deciding to use up the already-existing freezer and pantry items I had (which included a lot of carb- and fat-heavy stuff like homemade Belgian waffles and pancakes and hearty ragus for pasta), it’s been hard to stay in the weight-loss mode. That’s OK for now though - I’ve lost all of the weight I needed to and I really could stop here and be all right. But it would be nice to get completely back on track and finish off the rest of the weight I’d like to lose. Hopefully that will happen soon.

I usually put on weight over the holidays, then resume my regular diet in January and take it off again. This year, due to travel and a family visit, I didn’t take much off before we went on lockdown here in March. Even though I’m on the diet on which I usually lose weight, I’ve frustratingly not been able to lower it significantly because until recently we weren’t allowed to leave the house for exercise. Now that we can, I hope I’ll be able to start losing again. However, it will still probably be more difficult because we can only go out three days a week; my normal regime is five or six days a week.
