Is it possible to do Weight Watchers while adhering to the Atkins diet? I mean, I’m not all about the idea of eating tons of fat all day, but I like the idea of cutting carbs and sugar.
Vixenation, yes it is.
As long as you stay within your points range, you can choose whatever kind of foods you like, whether that’s more protein, more carbs, more whatever.
So, I’ve heard one can work for Weight Watchers after making goal weight. How does that happen?
What’s it like to work for them?
Heh heh. You asked, I’ll answer.
You’ll need to become a Lifetime Member first. (which means getting to goal and completing 6 weeks of maintenance) Then you become eligible for employment.
Talk to any of your meeting room employees, and they can probably give you a form to fill out, and let you know if your area currently is hiring. (ours is not, but we always accept applications for the time when we need to bolster staff)
I’ve been working for WW since October of 1997. I became a Lifetime Member in August of 1997. I am a meeting leader as well as a receptionist (the weigher). Right now I work 3 meetings a week, which is about 6-7 hours of work. The pay (at least in our area) isn’t great, meaning that it’s tough to make a living at it, but generally people who work for WW aren’t doing it for the money.
As a condition of your employment you will be required to weigh in once a month and stay at your goal weight. If you ever put on some pounds, you go on probation for a bit. If you don’t get it back off within the specified time, you will be removed from your scheduled meeting until you are back at goal.
That’s really why I went on staff. I knew if I was just accountable to myself that it would never last. Now that I’ve been doing it, though, I love it. It’s a pretty rewarding job, knowing that you help people get where they want to be. I have a lot of fun with it, and it’s really caused me to come out of my shell and get LOTS better at public speaking.
There are some staff meetings and stuff that are kind of cheesy, and you have goals to meet for product sales and stuff, but I don’t find that it really takes away from the experience of helping members out. And since for me it’s a part time job, I pretty much roll with the punches and don’t take it too seriously.
My goal is to one day have the means to quit my full time job and work “full-time” for Weight Watchers. It’s a lot more fun than being an accountant.
Hi, can I join in? I’m not doing WW, I’m just trying to lose weight in a heatlhy, permanent way. I was on Atkins for a while and it worked at first, but then it didn’t work at all. I think that I was still eating too many calories. Even though Atkins tells you not to count calories, if you’re eating more than you’re expending, you’re not going to lose. Plus, long-range Atkins was difficult for me as I got bored.
So, anyway, I need to lose about 15-20 pounds. I guess I don’t really look overweight (unless you look closely!), but I know it’s there and since it’s all in my thighs and stomach, it makes clothes really hard to find (I have an hourglass figure as it is so my small waist already makes it hard to find clothes that fit). Anyway, I finally decided that I’m tired of hating the way I look and I’m trying to DO something about it instead of just whining. My goal is to be at around 130 pounds.
I started on Monday and am using Fitday to track what I eat. I’m trying to stay on approximately 1500 calories a day (which, unless I did the calculations wrong should be about 1000 less than what I expend, based on bmr). Fitday rocks! I’m also trying to make sure that I eat a good ratio of carbs to fat to protein (though the Atkins-ite inside is still keeping away from bread, rice, pasta, etc.). I’m also trying to exercise - and that’s the hardest part. I HATE exercising. I find it mind-numbingly BORING. However, yesterday I took another step and joined a club. I’m going to an aerobics class after work today (ugh). I’m proud of myself for that step - but I’ll be prouder if I can keep going. I’ve also made an appointment for Monday with a personal trainer to learn about weights and find out whether I’m doing this all right.
So far I’ve been good all week - though a bit hungry. As of this morning I’ve also lost about 6 pounds since Monday, though I’m 100% sure that’s just water weight - it’s too much too quick.
I hope I can do this - I’m tired of hating the way I look.

PS I’m going to try that GLOP recipe - sounds good!
scout, that is great to know!
mcms_cricket, I think we are diet twins. I have the same problem areas as you seem to, and want to try both Atkins and WW.
vixenation, after I read that, I kept thinking of that old cartoon and now "Wonder twins, ACTIVATE, shape of… " has been running through my head all day.
Atkins did work for me at first as I’m a bit of a carb. addict, but it is a very restrictive menu.
OK, tried my first class today. This gym doesn’t have a ton of classes, but there is one after work each day. Today it was something called “step and sculpt” and it totally kicked me in the ass. It was a more advanced class than I should probably be taking to start out with (considering that I haven’t worked out at all since… oh… never), plus I didn’t know the routines and combinations. There was only one other person taking the class, though, so the instructor tried to help me as much as she could. Still - she’d do a combination and I’d be flailing and fumbling and getting it totally wrong, and after the first ten minutes I had to stop to catch my breath. Then try to figure out what to do, then stop again… I’m sure I was the comic relief of the class. Well, I couldn’t stop laughing, at least.
Still, I did it. I’m very proud! Right now though, the diet part of all this seems much easier in comparison. I can’t wait to see what Fresh Hell the next class brings. The next one on Monday is called “Cardio Kickboxing.” I’m quailing in fear already…

Great to see some new faces!
Welcome!
Here’s where I am:
WW scale:31 lbs
This week’s loss: 2.5 lbs
Why do I still feel so fat, though? I still cringe when I see my reflection in the mirror and even the smaller sizes seem big. I think that my brain isn’t caught up with my body yet.
Anyway, I want to start doing aquafit (water aerobics) soon but the thought of me in a bathing suit is putting me off. I hate shopping for them and the only one I like is the maternity suit I have that has a little skirt attached. Not the height of fashion, but good coverage!
If I can fit this lard butt in a bathingsuit, so can you darlin! The skirted ones are good for hiding problem areas. Wear what’s comfy and don’t bother yoursen with what others may think. You’re beautiful and you know it
Aquafit is wonderful and quite good for ya. If I could afford it would be back at it straight away. But alas it is out of my price range. Can barely afford the weekly meetings, but I can’t give up now.
Something has to work, and I’m hoping this is it.
Thirty pounds gone.
Finally.
Well done!!
Congratulations!
30 on Friday, and 32.5 on Monday. I’ll take it!
Way to go GingerOfTheNorth!!! That is awesome!!!
Today is WI for me. And I’m so mad, I forgot my booklet and my other things. GRRRR. I’ll have to get it updated next week then.
Here’s to a slimmer summer by the minute!!!
I just got back from WI. Down another 1.6 for a total loss of 20.8!!!
Go, skittles and Gingy!
You guys are doing great. How motivating.
(P.S. I’m menstrual and have eaten 4 peices of WW lemon cake. Make me stop!! Yes, I pointed them and they are one point each. 4 points wasted!)
We should post some pics, before and after! Ok, maybe not!
Hello?
Anyone out there?
I would like to know if anyone knows how many points in a Mike’s Hard Lemonade.
Ginger: I don’t know that, but there’s a new drink here, already mixed in bottles which is Bacardi and Diet Coke at 1pt for the whole bottle, but again, IIRC, the points in the US and UK/ROI are not the same.
I lost a pound this week, which is fine. I was having my monthly wobbly and was wearing jeans, a very heavy belt and clunky shoes.
We do WI with shoes on, so the shoes do matter.
According to my home scale, I’ve just reached a major milestone. I’m no longer in the 80’s.
GOTN - I didn’t answer you yesterday because I had no idea what a hard lemonade even was, much less how many points it might have!
From what Anahita says it sounds like it might be booze of some description. If so, well I hope there are very few points in one, especially if you like it!!!
Anahita another pound, eh? Well done you.
We get weighed in our shoes as well and last night I reached two stone mark!
Our leader gives us a little glass pebble when we reach a stone marker - “As clear as your conscience” she says!!
Anyway I’m delighted, as you may imagine!!
Keep up the good work SDMBWW pals, and just think - between us o far we have lost enough fat to make a whole new person.
Yeuch!. He/she could be a Doper - I hereby name this new being
Excess Baggage!
(And yes, I checked that no one was already called that! - Very sensitive soul, me)
OK - well, this thread officially “died” but I was just wondering how my fellow WW are doing. I’m down a total of 22 pounds and need a mere 1.6 pounds to finally hit my 10%!!!
So - tell me - are we all thinner?!?
As of my last meeting on Monday, I am also down 25 pounds!
My magnet went right on the fridge.
