Weird Beard Hair

Every once in a while, I will discover an extra thick and coarse hair on my face. These hairs will come out of the skin painlessly when pulled on and will have a little black “tail” on the end that was under the skin instead of the white bulb that usually accompanies a hair that’s been pulled out.

What causes this? And why do these hairs have these characteristics?

I get these too; they’re usually very thick, but quite soft - almost waxy- and easy/painless to pluck; I think the phenomenon is somewhat related to ingrowing beard hairs.

Can’t contribute to an answer, but when my wife saw me pull one out, she FREAKED and started calling me BrundleFly.
