Weird computer/Internet problem

I sure hope someone here can help me because this problem is driving me crazy!

First of all, I have a P4 with XP. I am on a home network with another computer hooked up to a DSL connection. I show that I have the network connection, but suddenly have trouble getting online. The other computer has no problems.

I fire up my computer, and after all the setup stuff has completed and the HD winds down, opening up IE shows I have no internet connection. I try opening Outlook to check my email and it shows connecting, but never does.
As soon as I try to shutdown or restart the computer, Outlook jumps in real quick and downloads my email, then the computer shuts down. After starting back up, still no internet, and although Outlook has downloaded some emails, it will not connect back up.

Today I find that when I restart, as soon as I have a desktop, even though things are still loading in, if I click on my IE icon I can indeed get on the web. It’s like if I click on it early I can get on before something loads in and messes it up. However, Outlook will still not connect for my emails. If I close the browser, I lose my internet connection and have to start over. If I leave the connection on, and try to connect something else up like an update to AdAware or something, I can surf with the browser but nothing else will connect in the background. Weird.

I have already run Norton AV, AdAware and Spybot and none of it seems to help. Why am I suddenly having trouble getting on the net and why won’t anything but the browser work through it?

Run Disk Cleanup to dump your internet caches, Windows temp files and recycling bin. Click Start. select Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup. Select the C: drive, then check all the boxes. and click OK, then Yes when it asks if you are sure. Close all browser windows, then open a new one and see if it connects.
