A problem recently arose with my default dial-up connection on my laptop and I was wondering if anyone might be able to help…
I have internet explorer configured to always dial my default connection when I open up the browser for the first time. It has never given me any problems, but last night when I started the computer and clicked the internet explorer icon, I immediately got the “Work Offline” message box. If I hit the Try Again button to establish a connection, the broswer window simply loads the “Page Cannot Be Displayed” dialog and internet explorer never tries to dial my default connection, even though I have it set to dial it every time. It seems like it thinks there is already a connection present when I start internet explorer.
I can manually go into my network connections and dial this specific connection, but I can’t figure out why internet explorer will not dial it for me anymore.
Any ideas?
I am running internet explorer version 6.0 (SP1) on Windows XP. Thanks in advance for any help!
Sometimes restarting your computer helps these odd Windows problems.
Try disabling everything under LAN settings in Connections.
I think i might have a similar problem.
When I click on IE, I get a box that says no internet conection availible, and there are a couple choices, but both take me to an error screan like you had.
I could get on the internet by going to the conections option on my task bar, but that;s beside the point.
I think I might have fixed it though, for some bizare reason, when I make the google toolbar invisible (right button click and uncheck google tool bar on the top menu) close IE, then reopen it, it will automatically connect.
I’m not sure if that will help you thou, most of the time it seems like you need to know voodoo magic to make computers work.
Well I’ll be damned. It was the google toolbar that was giving me problems. I disabled it and I get an automatic connection again now. Thanks for the advice!
I guess this goes to prove that even Windows and all of its bug-filled glory is no match for the randomness of knowledge at the Straight Dope.
