I do not usually use Safari. But ,once in a while, I borrow my buddies. Sometimes, I will be typing along happily here at the SDMB, etc, when I swish or click somewhere.and whatever I am typing zooms off to one side, usually to the right, never to be seen again.

A two-finger swipe left or right will navigate through the browser history. You can just swipe the other direction to return.
It can be disabled in system prefs / Mouse / Gestures.
I was using a mouse, hose does one two finger swipe with a mouse?
one finger swipe on the mouse does the same thing.
