Or, “That film with the guy from ‘Road Warrior’ and the girl from ‘Repo Man’”
Rewatched it recently…really odd pacing, doesn’t hold up particularly well. Some classic lines though, “You can’t come in here hitting people with your Rex Harrison hat.”
Funny thing is, the best actor is Kelly LeBrock. Solid timing, looks like she’s having a lot of fun. Doesn’t rush her lines.
I liked it. Just one of those silly movies you don’t think about too much. I’d like to see an X-rated version. The TV series was pretty fun too. The Twilight Zone parody episode was a riot, although honestly I don’t think I would have gotten half the references if I hadn’t just finished watching the Twilight Zone series on VHS.
Oddly enough, my wife and I was watching Aliens last night and for shit 'n giggles, started throwing out Chet quotes whenever Hudson started freaking out:
“Ripley, I wouldn’t give a squirt of piss for your ass right now.”
The pacing is all over the place. It just isn’t as tight as other Hughes films. There’s a ton of people going “Ohhh shitttt! Ohhh noooo! Ohhh Shitttt!”
The actor playing Wyatt and the two actresses as the love interests weren’t so great.
I thought the actor who played Wyatt was fine, especially for the nerdy bullied character he portrayed. Now my main problem with the two love interests is that they really werent attractive enough…although partly because of the bad 80’s hair.
The only thing about this film that I can say hasnt held up at all is the clothing and the hair.
I’m oddly distracted by the outfits that Robert Downey Jr. and friend are wearing. And all the makeup they have on. If those two are the coolest guys in school, then they must go to the most progressive high school in the nation.
In the 80’s, there were no attractive girls. Attractiveness was judged purely on height of hair, saturation of eye shadow, and quantity of layered fashion accessories.
I agree with others here, Kelly Lebrock and Bill Paxton were the gems of this movie. Otherwise, while the movie was a fun romp, it lacked any character or heart of other Hughes movies. The two love interests in particular were never given any development beyond “popular girls”, nor were there any potential side-line love interest girls to add tension.
Best part of the movie was them getting stoned in the jazz club. “Chicks can’t hold their smoke”.
They were both plenty attractive, especially for those two dorks. I have always thought Hilly was smoking hot and the better looking of the two even when I rewatched the movie a few months back. It’s all about perspective they were compared against LeBrock who was in her prime.
They got drunk in the jazz club on Blind Dog Bourbon, and AMH told then the story of the 8th grade girl (with some tig ol bitties) who hung up on him and kicked him in the nuts. Her name was Lisa, and that’s who Kelly LeBrock’s character is named after.
