Claremont’s intended origin for Nightcrawler’s birth parents was pretty weird. Instead of Mystique being his mom, ol Chrissy boy intended for her to have shapeshifted into a man and fathered Kurt with her elderly (or at least she always looked elderly to me) lesbian lover, Destiny. Yeah, that’s even weirder than Mystique having had Kurt with the mutant devil.
I loved Claremont’s work on X-men (at least his original, run) but damn, it’s a good thing he had editors there to reign in a lot of his crazy initial ideas. Guy was nuttier than Vince Russo sometimes.
Bob Cobb? The Maestro? No wonder he thought he could keep Jerry out of Tuscany with those powers.
Unless it was Bobby Cobb, then no wonder he was able to invent PENNY CAN!
Thanks, Trinopus, but I can’t take credit for that one! While we’re on the subject of fake comic book covers, there’s a guy who puts one up every day, nothing like that one though. Some of his work is truly inspired.
Well, there’s mildly weird and there’s weird even for comics. Some of Bruce’s girlfriends (specifically Silver & Vicki) are pretty normal. Talia is less so.
I have *two. * Exhibit one is Donna Troy and *shudder * Terry Long. She’s the beautiful young clone/sister/something of Wonder Woman. He’s a creepy past-middle aged man with a horrible red beard who happily dates and marries his student and ogles her and her super-friends. He was just…ugh.
The other is non-romantic: when poor Matt Murdock was afraid that people might find out he was Daredevil, he decided to follow the instincts of his psycological issues and multiple concussions and create a whole new identity: Mike Murdock, his loud-talking, flashy twin brother. “He’s the hippest, dollface!”
Sykywise often rides on the back of his great, great, great…etc. grandmother, Timmain, who never wears clothes. In the latest issue they have also become lovers.
From Infinity Inc. back in the 80s: Northwind’s dad was a shlubby scientist and his mom was a weird bird creature with a beak. Roy Thomas never got too detailed about that one.
Claremont’s idea for Nightcrawler’s parentage seems a bit weird on the surface, but I think it makes sense for the characters and their powers. It’s certainly better than the official story we got, where Mystique is his mother and his father is a mutant who looks like Satan part of a group of demon-looking mutants responsible for creating the idea of the devil (and retconning Angel into being part of the opposite line of mutants who inspired the idea of angels).
Which begs the question, is Mystique actually capable of creating functional testes when she assumes male form? And does her ‘normal’ form contain a Y chromosome?
