Welcome back to Washington...JOE GIBBS!!!

Wah!

The breaking news in DC this morning isn’t about the Iowa debate.

It’s not about policy or politics.

It’s not about local traffic.

The Washington Post is reporting that Joe Gibbs is returning to the Redskins!!!

WAH!!!

A slight hijack related to Joe Gibbs:

My sister in law is a great woman, but completely oblivious when it comes to football. Several years ago Joe Gibbs, who is a devout Christian, came to her church to be a lay speaker. After the service, my SIL, knowing for sure that she had seen hiim SOMEWHERE before, asked him, “Aren’t you the manager of the new Giants (grocery store in the DC area) over on Route 610?”

maybe, just MAYBE!
<oh, I hope I hope I hope I hope I hope>

OMFG!!!

Let me quote a bit of Michael Wilbon’s take on it:

This is the best thing that could happen to this team. Would Snyder be so bold as to tell Gibbs how to run his team? Would he demand that Gibbs cut this guy or play that guy? No, he wouldn’t dare.

Once again, OMFG!!

He’s probably going to get $5 million a year, just like Spurrier. Only difference is, Gibbs is worth it.

Heh, well… I’ve been -trying- to tell Snyder for -years- to bring back Gibbs! (LOL like I would be able to say that to Snyder and that he would even consider listening to me!). But in all honestly, I am in complete agreement–Gibbs’ return would be the best thing to happen to the Redskin since he left, imho. Yes, Gibbs is -worth- whatever amount they pay him.

The latest from the Washington Post:

Yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwww!!!

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Again, this is bigger than anything in this town.

GWB could be caught on camera in bed with Michael Jackson today and he wouldn’t make the front page tomorrow!

When my Cowboys played the Redskins earlier this year, it was their poorest and most inept perforrmance of the year, but still the Skins couldn’t do squat against them. We did everything we could to throw away the game and Spurrier and his boys still couldn’t capitalize. While that was uproariously funny in that we knew it must have driven Snyder mental, it wasn’t good football. We should have gotton spanked for such a performance, yet the Skins handed us an undeserved win.

With the hiring of Gibbs, those days are gone and I don’t for one second miss them. He’s such a quality coach and quality person, a worthwhile advesary. This is awesome. The competition is back!

Not only do Redskin fans have a reason to rejoice, their opponents do as well. Let’s get the Giants back in shape and then rejoice at the rebirth of the NFC East.

This makes for good football.

I like the attitude of Tom Friend on ESPN.com:

I’ve heard a rumor that Gibbs has already hired Gregg Williams (ex-Buffalo head coach) as defensive co-ordinator. Probably a good move, as Williams was running a good defense up here, though was out of his element as a head coach.

Doesn’t look like this will affect the Nextel Cup teams either.

It would be a shame if it did though, seeing how he won 2 championships in 3 years.

Go Smoke!

Tom Friend’s anguish over Gibbs frequent losses to Parcells are still pretty evident under his thin skin, eh? Heh, I love it.

Let the games begin.

(My limited Googling skills couldn’t come up with a Parcell vs Gibbs record. Any help here?)

And a small percentage of the 'Skins to make up for having to sell his small percentage of the Falcons.

Joe says it’s official!

Wow, lieu just showed me something I’d never seen before. A rational Cowboys fan! How cool!

Yeah. Welcome back…to Raljon.

Well, let me be (likely) the lone voice of dissent and say that the hiring of Joe Gibbs isn’t going to lead to success on the field next season (anyone remember when Bud Grant came back to Minnesota?). I do predict that they won’t lose as stupidly as last year, though.

www.pro-football-reference.com has the answers.

Gibbs and Parcells overlapped as head coaches in the 1983-90 seasons, IOW Parcells’ tenure as Giants head coach. The Giants went 10-6 against the Redskins in the regular season during this time, plus beating them in the NFC championship in January 1987.

I agree the 'Skins couldn’t have chosen a better coach, he’s the one guy who Danny Boy might, and I say might, leave alone ( you can never be sure with the ego-that-walks-like-a-man). Gibbs needs to be damned sure he does like Parcells did in Dallas to Jerry Jones- Kick the old man upstairs and keep him around just to sign the checks. Joe Bugle is back as Assistant Head Coack too, looks like old home week in Raljon.

That being said, don’t look for a Bengals-like turnaround in 1 year. Gibbs won his championships with a dominating O line and a strong running game ( he’d love the Ravens ), those are the 'Skins biggest weaknesses. It’ll take a year or so to turn it around, if ever. Better hope that Vermeil isn’t a fluke and old dogs can learn new tricks. If anyone can do it, it’s Gibbs.
