Welcome to Canadoper Pub, 2019!

Not an issue as beer and liquor is an essential service! Good thing too.

Do we have a 2020 Canadoper thread?

Beer, please, cough, beer!

No, nobody bothered to start one.

Pubs were all closed by order of the Premier.

But not LCBO’s or registered cannabis stores…

Liquor stores and cannabis stores are open here, too.

So the dispensaries here not just our current Premier’s nostalgia for his former (reputed) career?

I cannot speak to Mr. Ford’s preferences, but I get the feeling that most, if not all, provinces feel the same way: keep the liquor and cannabis stores open. It’s not just Mr. Ford who feels that way.

Well, the last thing you want now is having the hospital full of alcohol withdrawal cases. That’s an accepted fact everywhere.

Some mayors in Saskatchewan have called for liquor stores to shut because they are seeking an upswing in domestic violence episodes, where liquor is a factor.

That “seeing”, not “seeking” I presume?

Have to justify a larger police budget somehow… Kidding aside, I’m sure there are a lot of worried social workers and therapists whose patients are in potentially bad scenarios right now. The fallout from this pandemic is only just starting to be felt, I’m afraid.

Also, would anyone like to trade Premiers with me? I swear every other decision he makes fills me with a frisson of horror and awe; in a bad way. It’s a bad day when Doug Ford seems like the voice of reason compared to Jason Kenney…

Trump declared that we are a security risk to the USA because we export steel. Then based on that absurd allegation he started a trade war with us which he lost.

About a week ago, Trump said that he was putting USA troops on the Canadian border and also said that he did not like steel coming through the US border from Canada.

Earlier last month Trump tried to obtain a Germany company that has a potential COVID-19 vaccine in the works so that the USA would have sole exclusive use of the vaccine. Germany confirms that Trump tried to buy firm working on coronavirus vaccine – POLITICO

Now Trump has tried to get 3M to devote its worldwide production of N95 masks to the USA, specifically cutting off Canada and Latin America. Coronavirus: US 'wants 3M to end mask exports to Canada and Latin America' - BBC News

Well good luck on that bubba boy. 320 employee owned Homac of Nanaimo is a pulp supplier for these masks, and within a few months (yes, an eternity) we’ll have Canadian manufacturers, but what will come of it all, other than many needless deaths, is a lasting lesson that the USA must not be trusted and that we must continue to develop our trade with the pacific rim and the EU.

In the short term, we should threaten to suspend Canadian patents held by USA business interests, and follow through if Trump does not cave forthwith. Quite simply, when Trump calls countries shitholes, he needs to look at himself and the people who elected him.

Freeland internationally is to Trudeau as C.D. Howe was domestically to King and St. Laurent. Freeland and Trudeau have proven to be a very effective team when it comes to international trade, e.g. their successes with the EU CETA and USMCA (with a lot of help from Mulroney et al). Also note that this time it will not be the USA against just Canada. It will be the USA against many countries and many major multinational corporations.

Trump’s reign will be remembered as a low point in the decline and fall of the American Empire.

He’s been able to kill thousands of his citizens maybe he just wants to add some Canadians to his death toll.

Personally it would take 3 Obamas in a row for me to begin trusting the US again. I read a comment somewhere recently that “the US doesn’t have friends, it has interests” - the last 2 months (even moreso than the last 3 years) has made that abundantly clear.

Oh right. I have at least two letters I should finish writing right now. (One to the office of the Premier, the other to the Ethics Commissioner)

I didn’t want to start a new thread for Canadian eyes only, so…

What’s good on Netflix Canada? I liked the Tiger King in a redneck, train wreck sort of way, but I’m usually a sci-fi or comedy type of person. I don’t particularly like dramas or rom-coms. Psychological thrillers are great though.

Anyone?

Bert Kriesher or Tom Sagura (stand up), Lost in Space is alright, Dr Who or the Firefly series. That should get you started.

Is my Netflix different than yours? Because neither Firefly nor Dr. Who appear on mine.

If you do like standup, the Seth Myers special, Lobby Baby, is great. I’m going to watch Arrival and Sicario to get excited for the Dune re-do.
