"Welcome to My Life": Celebration of, or indictment of, teen angst?

I was listening to Simple Plan’s “Welcome to My Life” recently on the radio (lyrics are all over the 'Net, but I don’t want to link directly due to copyright concerns; a little Googling should give them to you). It struck me how self-pitying, self-serving, and whiny the lyrics are. It’s almost BEGGING for the “you think YOU’VE had it rough??” speech.

But then I thought, that just may very well be the purpose. It may be parodying or condemning the (not exclusively) teen habit of thinking that their problems are the worst in the universe, and having a laugh at the expense of those who’ll listen and take it literally, swooning 'cause this band sooooo understands them.

I can see it going either way. What do you all think?

If Simple Plan and their ilk are parodying that self-loathing shit, they need to get a new theme, because those bands have been making that trite for what feels like an eternity.

I seriously doubt that Simple Plan is anything but dead serious.
