Welcome to the Canadoper Café, 2025!

He saw what was happening in the US, where Biden was, policy-wise, one of the best Presidents we’ve ever seen, who made major accomplishments in the face of a recalcitrant Congress who had to be cajoled into doing anything at all, and yet, despite all that, he was lagging behind an obnoxious blow-hard who did nothing but whine and complain.

PP figured that would be a winning strategy here, and he might have even been right, had Trump not won the last election.

An in other news, looks like Doug Ford won again. That’s not too surprising, but I’m waiting to see how low the voter turnout was this time. Can we break last time’s record for lowest turnout?

Agree. Here in Alberta, I know a number of people who are planning to vote Liberal in the next election. Who is the Liberal leader? They don’t care, because they see PP as much more dangerous than any Liberal. He’s a Trumpist, and surprisingly (to the ROC and to the world at large), Trump is not much liked out here in Alberta. Liked by some, sure, but certainly not by everybody. Look for the Liberals to pick up a couple of seats in Edmonton.

And if PP continues to paint himself as “Canada’s Trump,” then I don’t see him getting a lot of support in Ontario and Quebec, or even BC. Minority CPC government at best right now.

It ended up being pretty close (less than a thousand votes over the Liberal candidate) but the PC incumbent held on in my riding.

In my riding the PC candidate won by 40 votes.

I caught some of the coverage of British PM Keir Starmer’s recent visit to the White House, and it gives us a pretty good idea of the amount of support we can expect from Britain against Trumpian hostilities.

Starmer was shamelessly obsequious throughout the visit. I don’t mean normal diplomacy, I mean utterly spineless and groveling, unlike Macron who showed some integrity, Starmer must have already started igniting the bromance over the phone, because Trump greeted him warmly on his arrival, unlike Macron who was left to be greeted by a staffer. But the low point came at the subsequent joint press conference.

A reporter asked Starmer about Trump’s threats to annex Canada, and what views King Charles had on the issue. Starmer could have a taken a principled stand, or he could have fallen back on weak diplomacy-speak. Instead, his stunning reply was to attack the reporter, accusing him of sowing divisiveness. IOW, how dare you try to interfere in this here beautiful budding bromance I got going.

Maybe when Britain needed our help when they were fighting for their existence in World War II, we should have told them to buzz off, we were busy sucking up to Hitler.

Even without Trump I think he might well have frittered away a majority as long as the Liberals named a new leader did didn’t have Trudeau’s baggage,

His strategy isn’t working and he just keeps at it.

We managed to boot the NDP candidate in favour the Liberals. PC was a distant third.

I was travelling yesterday when all the tariff stuff was happening live, so I went into the LCBO today just to see it with my own eyes. Yep, a bunch of empty shelves with signs on them explaining the situation. I particularly liked the one empty shelf right next to all the tequila.

But, weirdly, not as many empty shelves as I was expecting. Percentage-wise, does anyone know how much of the LCBO’s inventory was from the US?

You can see their entire catalogue online and filter by country (sidebar)… however they removed all USA products already. So who knows.

A quick look at LCBO financial reports suggests they sell about $7 billion worth of booze a year. About $1 billion is in US goods. Assuming average costs are divided among many goods, this suggests about 15% of goods sold at the LCBO are American.

Yeah, 15% feels about right for the number of shelves that we empty.

With the large (200%+) tariffs apllied to dairy prodicts exceeding certain quotas (I assume the quota is an annual one) - how often are these quotas exceeded?

Pretty much never. Canada has an excellent regulated supply and demand system for eggs which sees little waste.

post deleted.

Carney clinched victory decisively, winning on the first ballot with 85.9 per cent of the vote,

I literally said “Woah!” out loud when I read that.

Let’s hope he works out.

Hoping he’ll turn out to be as fiercely anti-Trump as Freeland has been.

I’ve started seeing now BOTH anti-Carney and anti-PP ads.

“Mark Carney… he’s JUST LIKE JUSTIN!”
“PP… He’s Trump’s favourite man!”

I understand how both parties want to take control of the other’s narrative, but wasn’t Carney pursued by the Conservatives too (before he left to become Bank of England president)? Kinda takes all the punch out of the fear-mongering, no? Meh, such ads are not targeted towards me, I guess.

I think Carney was always a Liberal.

I’m not at al surprised by the outcome, I did except more votes for Freeland. She was my last choice.

He was governor of the Bank of Canada under Harper, around the time of the 2008 financial crisis. He was generally praised for his work during those years, but of course the current Conservative party is trying to ret-con that, and claim he was a typical terrible Liberal.
