Yeah, I said that earlier: Trump may have stumbled his way into finding the one way to make the CPC lose the next election.
Not one Canadian voted for him, and yet, we’re going to take it in the ass because of him. So the rest of the Americans will have to bend over a bit too, sorry not sorry.
“There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” Trudeau wrote on X.
I saw that this morning, and I thought, “Okay, looks like Lame Duck Justin is going to have at least a bit of fun his last few months…”
Canada becomes the 51st state. Do you really think that the US would make French an official language? Even English is not an official US language (not to mention Spanish).
Are languages other than English allowed in Congress?
I’m wondering if Justin might have any tales to tell about Mr. Trump’s behaviour and statements behind closed doors at G7 meetings…
Let me put it this way - if you voted Republican, you are criminally liable. If you didn’t vote, you are guilty of aiding and abetting through your negligence. I’m willing to cut a bit of slack for those who voted Democrat, and for those who are now part of the resistance, but as for the rest? It’s pretty hard to be civil…
I’ve been a registered voter in the same precinct for over 40 years. Haven’t knowingly missed an election in that time. I’ve volunteered as an election place judge for 20 of those years. This last election we had a gun rights fetishist threaten the 5 elderly women working at the poll so he could exercise his right to vote because we wouldn’t let him open carry in the polling place. My no-more-Trump signs are still displayed in my yard and I’ll be be marching in my state capital at the state capitol at the People’s March this Saturday. Good enough for you?
Yes, but Le_Ministre_de_l_au-dela’s point still stands that it’s a big ask to remain civil toward(s?) a certain 77,000,000 people. (and which I should have made clearer in my previous post, upthread)
Agreed. I can only manage being civil to those deplorable ignorant 77,300,000 by avoiding them as much as possible and not engaging whatsoever with their deluded mindset if I can’t avoid them.
But since we can’t know who they are just by looking at them (well, some are obvious…) it is in many ways just easier to avoid the USA entirely at least in terms of tourism or general purchasing. I have no intention of engaging in any personal travel to the USA any time soon (work might send me there for a couple of days). Harder to avoid buying American products, but I generally try to shop local when possible anyways.
Sorry that good people get tangled up in that, but that’s the way it is.
I guess we’re choosing the (polar) bear!
Seems entirely reasonable to me. Have at it.
A friend of mine is the retired chaplain for the Toronto Fire Services, and he has asked me to go to the World Trade Centre memorial and send him photos of the markers for those Toronto-based first responders who went down to help out. I’m planning to bundle up some time in the next couple of days and head down.
It’s pretty weird being a resident of NYC at the moment
At least one Canadian voted for Trump. My friend (now ghosted) who lives in Alberta.
Here is what the NYT makes of Pierre.
Michael deAdder caught the situation beautifully in this morning’s cartoon - The USA invading Canada
Jean Chretien turned 91 yesterday and he wrote for The Globe and Mail. Here’s part of his column:
Today is my 91st birthday.
It’s an opportunity to celebrate with family and friends. To look back on the life I’ve had the privilege to lead. And to reflect on how much this country we all love so much has grown and changed over the course of the nine decades I’ve been on this Earth.
This year, I’ve also decided to give myself a birthday present. I’m going to do something in this article that I don’t do very often anymore, and sound off on a big issue affecting the state of the nation and profoundly bothering me and so many other Canadians: The totally unacceptable insults and unprecedented threats to our very sovereignty from U.S. president-elect Donald Trump.
I have two very clear and simple messages.
To Donald Trump, from one old guy to another: Give your head a shake! What could make you think that Canadians would ever give up the best country in the world – and make no mistake, that is what we are – to join the United States?"

This is an interesting position to take. If I voted Liberal in 2021, am I criminally liable for their mistreatment of aboriginal Canadians, or coverup of the foreign interference problems? If I voted Conservative in 2006 am I criminally liable for, well, whatever they subsequently did? It’s been awhile but I’m sure they did something awful.
To @Le_Ministre_de_l_au-dela’s defence, people who voted for Trump voted for a known felon who has threatened to go after a Congressional group that was investigating an insurrection that he formented.
Indeed, I would not have voted for Trump in a million years, but it remains a fascinating position to assign criminal responsibility to a voter for the crimes of the elected officials. Now I am quite nervous about voting this year.
