Well behaved animals should be allowed in more places

I am triggered by grown women who are unable to effectively deal with past trauma. Therefore, I request that your mom be kept out of any area where I am likely to be.

That is to say, we cannot deal with every single personal challenge that people have, and protect them from any unpleasantness in society; we have to strike a balance.

I had a vacation ruined by adults. We rented a duplex for a week on a beach. Not a very good beach but there were things nearby to take the kids to see. The other half of the duplex was booked by a couple with two kids. Very cute kids. The unit has a shared back yard. My kids, their kids played together very nicely, back there.
The parents never came out. I was in and out. (Yep,Helicopter mom).

For 3 nights the couple screamed and fought. Horrific battles over, I couldn’t tell you.
It was alcohol/maybe other substances fueled.
It kept us up. It disturbed my children. I can only imagine what their little kids went thru.

After night 3, we left. Booked a hotel one night. Went home the next day.

So, sitting by a kid or drunk adult? I’ll take the kid. Everytime. Dog? Even better.
But there are rules about dogs on flights.
They are animals.

Drunks can be shown off the plane. That’s a good rule.

You can’t have these rules on flights about innocent children. Trying situation to be sure, sitting next to a crying baby. What’s a Mom to do, if it can’t be soothed?

Can’t throw it out a window.

Here’s the point. You can board the dog, fly it cargo, at least leave it in a carrier under a seat.
Unless you’re blind or disabled your dog should not be in a plane in any regular way like a human being.
It’s an animal.

I don’t care who you are, a miniature horse should never be on a plane in the cabin. Ever. That’s just ridiculous.
As ridiculous as the woman with her pet peacock. Nope.

Truth!

Airplane seats can barely fit my feet.

Co-worker tried to board his dog on a flight in cargo. The dog taco’d the door on his carrier/plastic kennel (whatever). And walked back up the luggage conveyor belt over the baggage to find his owner at the ticket counter.

A bit of a surprise for everyone.

They rented a car and drove. Good choice.

Boy, I just can’t get on board with the “animals should be allowed in more places” thing (the premise of the OP). I have dogs. I love dogs, and cats. I don’t want to go anywhere with my dogs other than to dog spaces. I don’t want to trigger anyone’s allergies or trauma. I don’t want to spend my time worrying about my dogs’ potential behavior or their needs or what scary-to-dogs shit might happen when we’re in an unfamiliar place.

Maybe, MAYBE it’s because I have a super anxious dog right now so he makes me anxious and I can’t imagine him being relaxed anywhere. But even with my previous princess sweet baby golden retriever I wasn’t trying to take her places.

Maybe also it’s why I don’t have kids. I don’t want to be responsible for a small dumb vulnerable animal when I’m trying to relax or go shopping or travel.

Americans tend to think they have all sorts of “rights” – without realizing that they are, in fact, just privileges.

A neighbor gripes when dogs pee on his mailbox . If there was no mailbox, he would likely complain if they peed on his court strip! (where the hell is the dog supposed to pee? how is the owner supposed to cleanup afterwards – poop can be scooped, but what of pee?)

The same neighbor recently was annoyed that I was drilling a piece of angle iron at 5:45AM, the other day: “We’re trying to sleep, here!” Sadly, he didn’t realize that I had the RIGHT to do so as city noise ordinance allows me to do that “after sunrise and before 8PM – except on sundays”

He likely also didn’t realize that the same ordinances prohibit his DOG from barking, audibly, until 7AM! Yet, he’s never had a FORMAL complaint from us (we always kept doors and windows closed so our dogs’ barking was confined to the house interior)

Amusing to see what he thinks his rights are and what they really are! (Pointing this out to him would fall on deaf ears… he would view it as “unjust”)

Exactly. If i want to go out walking, then I assume the risk.

As I said, yours. The onus is on you to operate the vehicle in a safe way that anticipates these sorts of things. Do you think it’s the CHILD’s fault?

Nor have I. But, I have had two of my vehicles “hit, while parked”, and one vandalized.

I DO anticipate them. And it’s the parents fault. You should not hide and jump out in front of moving vehicles. Is that MY fault?

Shit yes I’m much more cautious around ANY pedestrians. But pedestrians can be at fault.

Is it a bicyclists fault if they are riding in a bike lane and someone opens a parked car’s door right into them?

Listen, we are talking past each other. EVERYONE has a responsibility. Don’t try to take your dog to a place that will not be dog friendly. Fine. No problem. Do teach your children about safety around cars.

Does that work for you @dgy?

The law doesn’ t care about your notion of morality. You will be found at fault and expected to compensate. The judge may sympathize with you but will still tell you that you are responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle. Not you, not the kid or the kid’s parents.

I do not know what you are talking about.

Wait, what? That seems pretty early. Your locale allows outdoor work at sunrise, but dogs can’t bark until 7am?

That’s not theft, that’s just harvesting Nature’s bounty. That happens to be in your cupboards.

Pre-covid, I was at a mall with an upscale international food court. A woman had a small dog with her, on a leash, and was walking up to one of the counters to order. It took a dump on the floor.

Yes. Remodeling, drilling, demolition, woodworking, etc. are explicitly labeled as activities that the RESIDENT (not a hired agent) to perform these tasks between those hours/events. Likely a nod to the fact that it gets HOT here, very early, and that a resident should be enabled to do work at his residence (even if not a homeowner) even while having to report to a job.

My outdoor thermostat reads 102F, presently. NIghttime lows will soon be ~80F.

[At 7AM, many people are on their way to work or already there. Telling a person that they can’t hammer a board onto their home until 7AM would be an inconvenience for them. Likewise, if they return home at 5-5:30 (when it is REALLY hot), telling them that they must start and finish any noisey construction-type activities before 8 means a quick meal and an hour of work time.]

Note that a hired service would typically be working during that 7AM-8PM time so this wouldn’t inconvenience them – they’re being paid for the work. But, it would be inconsiderate (to residents) to allow paid workers to conduct business that early just out of convenience/accommodation.

Other conditions apply to noise, in general (unloading vehicles, raucous groups of people/parties, music, barking dogs, etc.). These are covered by more general times related to the sound level encountered on a particular type of property. I.e., if you are on residential property, you can expect to have LESS sound encroaching than if you were on an industrial property.

Me, too! I don’t even mind the crying - I just smile and think, “Thank goodness, somebody else’s child is fussing, and it’s not my responsibilty anymore!” (Plus, babies are cute.)

Making a loud racket outside at 5:45am sounds exactly like the 1% of people that ruin things for evening else because of “muh rights!!!”

It was 103, today. If I worked a 9-to-5, I would be coming home to 102, now. Should I be forced to NOT work around my residence (maybe cutting trees with a chainsaw) until it’s that hot AND I am not at work?

If I hire someone to do it, they have to wait for a more reasonable time – when THEY are at work. I hear my neighbor’s landscaper running their gas powered leaf blowers at 7AM. And, I am sure they are there at 7AM because it;'s hotter at 8AM!

Are you sugesting a homeowner/resident shouldn’t be able to work on THEIR home/residence without taking a vacation day – so they could do it during “normal working hours”? Or, would you rather let them all do this sort of stuff “all day Sunday”? Or, hire people to do it during “more reasonable” hours?

Sounds like you prefer giving extra privileges to folks with money…

And, yes, those ARE my rights – as enacted by our local representative government.

103? Wow. That seems awful warm for May.

Do you live in the Mojave?

Desert southwest. It will be 100+ all next week. 110 in June. Approach 120 before the rains come in July… when it will drop back to 100-ish.

You do not go outside during the day unless necessary; and, avoid direct sun if you have no choice. If you stand in the shade and extend your arm out into the unshaded space, you can visualize exactly where the shadow ends on your arm just by the temperature difference you perceive.

You don’t do anything in the evening – it’s 102 at6:45PM – because it is STILL hot.

The only time you can WORK outside (comfortably) is in the early morning. Folks walk their dogs at 4:30-5:00AM. After about 10AM, dogs need “slippers” to keep their pads from being damaged. Asphalt will be 140F when the air temp is 100; tires leave obvious rubber “skid marks” even though the vehicle didn’t actually skid (the rubber just melts off).

If I happen to be asleep in the wee hours of the morning, I have to delay MY walk until the few minutes before sunset – when it is ~90-ish (80 at midnight). Any later, and I have to worry about coyote, javelina, mountain lion… IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

OTOH, that 80 will feel “cool”; it’s not uncommon to see people wearing sweaters at night!

One can be well within one’s legal rights, and still be an obnoxious, selfish neighbor.
