Well, my vacation plans fell apart... what should I do?

I had a nice winter vacation all planned out with Astrogirl, my best friend dlight , and possibly his girlfriend. Fly to Amsterdam, live it up for a few days (lots of drinking and smoking planned…), then rent a car and sort of beat around Europe for a week or two making general nuisances of ourselves. Cool, eh?

Well, in the past few days those plans have unravelled like some, uh… um… horribly unravelling thingy! I feel like a racoon, drooling over a sugar cube, who takes it down to the stream to wash it off… WTF? What happened? I had it right here in my little racoony hands a second ago…

Astrogirl can’t make it (she has signed up for an expensive class that runs through the winter, plus she can’t get the time off from work), and dlight and his girlfriend are also out (dlight’s car has died, and he has to buy a new one… there goes his party in Europe money…).:frowning:

So now what do I do?

I’m really severely in need of time away from Seoul (I been here too long!!). I need to get the hell out of Dodge for a couple of weeks!

Here are my options for my solo vacation:

#1: go to Amsterdam and tool around Europe making an ass of myself alone. (I am quite capable of making an ass of myself, but it doesn’t sound too fun all by myself!)

#2: go to China, climb the Great Wall, get really drunk, and fall off. (Hmmm… that actually has merit! )

#3: Thailand!! I love Thailand!! (but it is a BAD place to go if you’re a male with an Asian-girl fetish, in a committed relationship trying to be good… ESPECIALLY by yourself! So that’s right out!!)

#4: go to San Diego, visit dlight for a week, fly to Wyoming and visit my father for a week. (Much as I’d like to see dlight and my dad… it sounds kinda boring! And Wyoming in the winter? SHUDDER)

#5: A whirl-wind tour of Afghanistan. (Um, no.)

#6: Hole up in my room, refuse to answer the phone, and drink myself blind for a couple of weeks. (Tempting, but might tick off Astrogirl.)
Any suggestions? Nothing too expensive… as I’m more or less broke at the moment, and won’t be able to spend more than a couple of grand on this vacation. I need adventure, and excitement, and really wild things! (But I’m kinda old and out of shape, so nothing too adventurous, exciting, or wild please! )

Help?

I know a lot of people who have traveled Europe alone, and quite happily. MrBlue92 (from the boards) just spent 3 weeks around England and environs. My friend Jim goes alone to Europe every coupla years. He always meets people on the trains, has interesting conversations, sometimes even switches his itinerary to hang out longer with people he enjoys.

I vote on #1. Have fun!

Why not plot a course from Doper to Doper, freeloading along the way? That way you can meet a bunch of us, have cheap housing, and gather fascinating stories to share when you return! I’d volunteer to let you freeload with me, but, you know, there’s work and my kid’s in the middle of her science fair project and the inlaws are about to move into a new house and need our help and the dogs need their ears cleaned and if I don’t get those mums planted soon, they’re going to die… but other than me, I’m sure you can find plenty of Dopers who’ll want you. Right, gang?? Right??

[sub]… or not

Come to Australia! You can come and visit us dopers

Well, so far #1 and #4 are tied…

But Australia? I hadn’t considered that one! Hmmm… intriguing! And I even speak some of the lingo there! “Good on ya, mate!” Etc.

I will have to carefully consider Australia…

well wouldn’t it be fairly close and cheap? ::too lazy to get up off fat arse and go and check globe on top of cupboard::

Plus if Europe is something you want to do with Astrogirl, then doing another place entirely this time is a Good Idea I think.

So Brisbane or Sydney mate? Or Melbourne?

I second Australia  It’s lovely weather there this time of year (or so I’ve been promised), and if you get someone in Australia to get the tickets for you it can actually be quite inexpensive; I’m doing a trip there for five weeks from America for less than $1500 USD. This includes a lengthy, touristy stopover in Malaysia and another in Osaka! dies Meanwhile the cheapest ticket I could find for an under-30-day stay through American travel agencies was $2550.

(Of course that was before the airlines started cutting their prices. You might be in an even better position now!)
