Well, so much for fucking racial harmony!!

Or at least that people wouldn’t be so much more open about it. It’s like racists feel freer to spew their bile.

:frowning:

There is hope.

Yesterday, I was in line at the damn grocery store when an elderly (white) female stranger hugged (white) me. She then explained that she is 92 years old, has never been more than 110 miles from her birthplace, is a good Christian, with a bunch of kids, a bazillion grand great grand & great-great grand kids, a 40 years dead husband who raised some plant on the fields they were born on, has voted straight GOP since WWII, and something about her little dog Toto, but she saw the Obama button on my coat, and she is so very happy that “the colored boy” is going to be her President that she had to share her excitement with me.

She said “colored boy” but she voted for him.

There is hope.

Gubmint cheeze. Only black folk can handle the sodium. White folk tried once to eat it and they swelled up like Violet Beauregarde, only they turned orange instead of purple.

Gotdammit, that was some good cheese. I am not kidding either. Good cheese.

Yeah, it was. (I’m as white as the cracker I put it on.)

That stuff made Velveeta seem like the finest aged Wisconsin cheddar.

Are you sure? Check the woodpile.
On a serious note, I remember arguing in GD that it was mathematically IMPOSSIBLE for there to be more black people on welfare than white people. Way back during the Cadillac drivin’ Welfare Queen days. A higher percentage of the black population was on public assistance but no where near the most people. It was impossible to convince many, even with numbers.

And lets not talk about the misconception that white people were more likely to be a victim of a crime perpetrated by a black person than a white person.

Now more people are ready to listen to reason. Mostly. Probably wouldn’t be able to convince the OP’s MyFace ex-friends.

Me, too. I am sick over that ornament joke. It’s the farthest thing from funny.

I dread Thanksgiving with my inlaws. I’m sure they’re bandying about all manner of similar shit.

I am considering insurrection (not going), but have to weigh my FIL’s frail health (lung CA now with mets to bone) against getting these assholes out of ALL my life… I doubt my inlaws will dare to say much–it’s my SIL’s husband that will not hold back. And I am waaaaay past the “smile and get along to go along” stage in my life. Why do people suck?

On the contrary sister, we need these chuckleheads out where we can see them. Sunshine is the best disinfectant.

Geez I don’t love Obama, but I definitely don’t want Biden taking his place.

Just a request- many of your fellow members have asked for no profanity in thread titles. Just a request. Thanks

I can’t presume to speak for devilsknew but I think the point is not so much to enable through silence as much as to lead by example. “You’re engaging in ugliness, I’m not going to validate it with a response.”

Again, not to speak for devilsknew, but something about “Love your enemies” comes to mind.

I really don’t think there is any way to actively combat hate. Ignorance can always be fought, but if you recognize that you’re dealing with ignorance that is rooted by hate, you’re going to get nowhere in a direct battle. All you can do is not hate, live well, and share the secret of your success when others envy your happiness and serenity.

When it all starts to get you down, look at these pictures. (SFW)

That is awesome.

Thank you! And on that page the blogger has updated with a link to the Flickr page of the original photographer.

He/she IS enabling; by laughing along with them and pretending to agree. And refusing to speak against such attitudes or even disassociate yourself from such people is most certainly NOT leading by example.

A foolish attitude, and one no one actually follows if they know what’s good for them.

“Dying a little inside” isn’t anywhere close to “happiness and serenity”. And refusing to fight bigotry isn’t something that should be emulated by anyone.

You should tell them: “CAREFUL! ‘Potato chips’ sounds like ‘Tomato ships.’” Then when he says “WTF is that supposed to mean?” you say “EXACTLY!!!”

Yeah right. My mother told me her aunt and uncle used to get it-and Aunt Sophie was a full-blooded Polack. They’d give it to Mom’s family occassionally and Mom is a Hunky-Bohunk-Polack. Ever had Slavic/Hungarian food? We’re talking Salt City.

 :stuck_out_tongue:

(If you’re ever in Pittsburgh, try the pierogies.)

This made me…really happy. I can’t for the life of me explain why, but…awww.

Goddamn it, the fact that this ‘hope’ and ‘change’ nonsense seeming maybe actually possible is making it much harder to be my normal, cynical, miserable self. Curse you, Barack Obama, with your inspiration and overcoming racial divides!
