I’m guessing she wont ever lie to the police again (when she finally gets out of Colombian jail, I mean).
But in all seriousness: what a boneheaded move on the end of our government. Really? Deporting a black girl who speaks no Spanish-- did anybody even look at her finger prints? Aye aye aye.
Wow. This is almost absurdly unreal to me. I’m having a hard time grasping how so many people would have had to fucked up on this case for her to end up in a Colombian jail. I really hope they get her out soon. Is there any chance for compensation?
It’s horrible, but I can understand how some of the bureaucratic screwups happen. But in the end, when it comes down to it, some group of people have to be escorting this terrified girl to an airplane, knowing that she’s destined for Columbia. And they don’t stop and say “Hang on, something’s wrong here.” Nope, it’s ‘just following orders’ all the way down.
There must be more to this story than the short article. The girl ran away from home. She did not want to be home. Apparently her objections to being deported were most minor. She was getting a free trip out. And where did she pick up the name of the illegal immigrant? She did not pull that out of thin air. She must have known the woman. She worked in the other country and only when she got tired of hanging out did the story come to the surface.
But yes, the authorities dropped the ball in many places too. Successful criminal and or deviant behavior often depends upon the laxity of officials.
That might depend on the Colombian authorities being told by the American government that the girl had the identity of a Colombian citizen. Why would they doubt Uncle Sam’s word?
But I agree with Al Bundy: this probably happened because the girl was happy to be deported: she could get even further away from home, with the American government paying her airfare.
I liked the grandma’s objection, “How do you deport a teenager and send her to Colombia without a passport, without anything?”
Well, I for one don’t expect illegal aliens to have passports.
On the one hand this is a spectacular fuck-up. On the other, Jakadrien was 14 years old, she was either going along with it to get away or someone at ICE was pissed at her. It’ll be interesting to hear what she has to say when they get her home.
Many names are not unique, so why the assumption that she was the Colombian national with outstanding warrants and not someone else with the same name?
I bet her Spanish is pretty good by now, probably better than it would have been with four years of high school Spanish. And she’s got some practical immigration and deportation experience. She’s probably qualified for a really good job with ICE or Homeland Security or someone now.
This is exactly what one of my friends said when discussing this earlier. What a truly awful name. Do you think it’s more “Jack-adrien” or “Jack-ahhhdreen?”
